Mum ‘needs lie down’ after finding out how much kids’ school is charging for toast

When it comes to being a working parent, there are some things that you cannot put a cost on… but one mum said she needed to lie down when she saw how much her kids’ school was charging for toast

A mum needed to “lie down” after finding out how much her daughter’s school was charging for offering children toast in the morning. If there is one thing parents know about childcare, it’s that companies will find a way to charge parents for anything.

From nappies and wipes to food and activities – there is always an extra charge added on to each monthly bill for children in childcare. And although the government offers 30 free hours of childcare for children from nine months old to compulsory school age – the savings only equate to around three days of full time childcare, not counting half-terms.

But for one mum with a child in pre-school, she was stunned after getting an extra bill on top of childcare costs just for a slice of toast.

The mum shared a picture of an invoice from the school which said she had paid £14 for one term of toast – which is only 13 to 15 weeks.

The invoice said: “School Shop. £14.00. Breaktime Toast Autumn Term 1 2026 – 4 days.”

The mum shared the invoice on TikTok and said: “I’ve just paid £14 for a term of toast at school. £14!! I need a lie down. How much do you pay? This is for a slice of toast at morning snack 0 and this is only for 4 days as well. 50p a day!”

Hundreds of other parents commented on the post, but could not agree if the price was a bargain or a rip off.

One parent said: “£14 dry toast = daylight robbery. £14 toast with Lurpak = FINANCIAL STEAL OF THE CENTURY.”

A second said: “£60 for school snack for my 3. Just to be told “the toast is always too crispy so I don’t even eat it” after the first day”

A third said: “£10.50 it will cost me if he has it everyday. Honestly I don’t care at all though he doesn’t really eat before school so its reassuring for me if he wants it and is hungry.

“He has the option of toast or crumpet and fruit is free if he wants that instead.”

A fourth said: “Damn my school used to offer tea and toast for free in the mornings. I don’t think it was all year round but for a good chunk of the year. I wonder if they still do it lol.”

A fifth added: “I’d happily pay the £14 for toast over battle with my child every morning to eat something.”
