Avocado toast is tastier if you take two minutes to prepare it with an everyday ingredient

Avocados can often taste quite bland unless you take a few minutes to prepare them with a very simple ingredient.

Avocado on toast makes for a fantastic breakfast option when you’re after something both nutritious and satisfying, yet it can often fall flat if you’re not sure how to prepare it properly. While many people adore avocados for their velvety texture and ease of spreading, the fruit itself carries quite a subtle flavour, which can make it feel repetitive rather quickly.

Now, Sara Wells, a cookbook author and co-founder of Our Best Bites, has revealed that avocados can be far more enjoyable – even tasting buttery – when paired with the correct salt, which draws out their natural flavour. Sara said: “I would avoid table salt. Using kosher salt or a flaky sea salt would work well. The larger salt crystals are a nice contrast to the creamy avocado.”

It may seem straightforward, but avocados carry a slightly bitter edge that conceals the delicate nutty and creamy qualities already found within the fruit.

Salt enhances the sensitivity of your taste buds, meaning that seasoning avocados will produce a more pronounced flavour while counterbalancing the richness of the fruit to reduce that bitterness.

A mere pinch of salt can transform avocados into something truly delicious, though it’s crucial to steer clear of table salt, as its fine crystals dissolve almost instantly, making it all too easy to overseason the fruit.

Opting for kosher salt or sea salt is far preferable, as they are less intense and rest on the surface of the avocado, giving you greater control over the seasoning while delivering a pleasing crunch with every bite.

Many people squeeze lemon juice over avocados, as the acidity enhances the fruit’s natural taste, while a drizzle of olive oil can be added to complement its creamy texture.

How to make better avocados on toast

You will need (for one person):

  • Half an avocado
  • One lemon
  • Kosher or sea salt
  • Black pepper
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Handful of fresh chives (optional)
  • One medium tomato (optional)

Method:

Start by cutting an avocado in half, removing the stone, and carefully scooping out the flesh with a spoon, trying to keep it as whole as possible.

Transfer the avocado into a bowl, cut it into uniform slices, then drizzle with olive oil and add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice.

Season well with salt and a pinch of black pepper to bring out the flavour. Mash the avocado for a smoother consistency, or leave the slices as they are if you prefer.

Toast your bread, lay the avocado slices on top, and enjoy as a straightforward yet delicious breakfast option.

Additional toppings such as poached eggs, bacon, or salmon work brilliantly. If you fancy including tomato or chives, finely chop the tomato once the seeds have been removed, and snip the chives into small pieces before sprinkling them over the dish.
