A cafe Philadelphia, USA, specialises in British food, serving pies, sausage rolls and more. One man visited to try its take on the classic British fry up and was stunned by one ingredient added to the dish
A man popped into a British cafe in the US and decided to give the venue’s spin on a full English breakfast a try – and one ingredient left him stunned. English cuisine is famously built around comfort, with classic dishes including pies, fish and chips, the cherished Sunday roast and, of course, the legendary full English breakfast.
Philadelphia venue Stargazy, which launched in 2015, has won acclaim for “serving up proper English grub in the heart of South Philly”. It serves sausage rolls, pasties, pies and much more, alongside imported British beverages and snacks aplenty.
The menu “changes regularly” and occasionally even “sells out”, thanks to customers who are eager to dive into an array of quintessentially English meals and delicacies.
One Saturday morning staple is the treasured fry-up, a quintessential British institution which continues to be adored by millions. It’s frequently hailed as a “hangover cure” and regarded as a satisfying, substantial meal that delivers sustained – and extremely high calorie – fuel.
It’s typically comprised of bacon, sausages and eggs – prepared in various ways from fried to scrambled to poached – alongside hash browns, mushrooms, grilled tomatoes and baked beans. Black pudding and toast often feature as well.
Naturally, people do tinker with the breakfast and might swap out certain elements for alternatives, or throw in some completely unexpected additions.
A Reddit user, posting as RiseUpAndGetOut, dropped into Stargazy to sample the establishment’s version of this classic British breakfast and uploaded a photo to the popular “fry up” subreddit.
In the picture, “Rise’s” dish is piled high with two fried eggs, sausages, bacon, grilled tomato, black pudding and plenty more. Priced at $22 (£16.27) and accompanied by complimentary tea – one ingredient was singled out for being truly authentic.
In the caption, Rise simply penned: “Cafe in Philadelphia. Solid effort with proper (imported) bacon.”
The breakfast enthusiast revealed he’d only “discovered” the spot this week but “may become a Saturday morning regular” following such positive impressions of the meal’s standard, particularly the imported bacon.
In the comments section, other Reddit users shared their thoughts. One British person said: “Was going to say (Englishman lived in US for over 20 years) – that bacon – for a proper fry up in the US is on point. Not easy to source. Speaking of sauce – nice to see you got the HP, OP. Splendid. City of Brotherly Love is doing well.”
Someone else said: “That looks pretty banging tbh [to be honest].”
A third posted: “That looks better than a lot of fry ups in the UK.”
While another contributor said: “That looks a proper greasy spoon breakfast – they even bothered to cook the eggs hot for a proper frill. Nice one.”
And another added: “Not a bad job from our colonial cousins.”
