An expert has revealed what shoppers should look out for when purchasing drinks

Prosecco lovers should look out for two words when buying their next bottle, according to a drinks expert. The advice comes from Sam Caporn MW, Aldi’s resident wine expert, often known as the Mistress of Wine. The author and Master of Wine shared a tip that could impress prosecco drinkers.
The expert has revealed the simple quality stamp to look for on the bottle. Sharing advice for supermarket shoppers, Sam recommended looking for two official classifications on the neck or label: DOC and DOCG.
Sam explained: “These letters are not just random jargon; they are Italian wine quality indicators. DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) is the standard quality classification, ensuring the wine comes from a specific, regulated region and guaranteeing a high-quality bottle.
“But, if you want to take your bubbles to the next level, look for DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita). This is the highest possible classification in Italian wine, meaning it has passed strict quality controls and taste tests.”
The expert added: “When selecting a bottle of Prosecco from the shelf, ‘Extra Dry’ can be confusing if you’re expecting a very dry wine. What it really means is that the wine is ‘off-dry’, with a subtle hint of sweetness. If you prefer your Prosecco dry, simply look for ‘Brut’ on the bottle, rather than ‘Extra Dry'”.
According to the expert advice, prosecco should be kept in the fridge to prevent spillage when opened. It’s advised to keep one hand firmly on the cork after removing the wire cage, then twist the bottle, not the cork.

To keep health risks from alcohol low, you should drink no more than 14 units a week, ensure you have several drink-free days, and avoid binge drinking. The NHS website offers information about alcohol support.
Aldi says its stores are stocking a selection of DOC and DOCG favourites ahead of ‘National Prosecco Day’ on August 13. The options include Costellore Prosecco DOC at £5.25 for 75cl and Costellore Organic Prosecco Rosé DOC at £7.99 for 75cl.
Many supermarkets also stock a range of low-alcohol or alcohol-free drinks. For example, Aldi’s current range includes alcohol-free sparkling white and alcohol-free sparkling rose.
