Lawns will be greener and less patchy if you scatter common item in garden

If you want your lawn to look green and healthy, there’s a simple task you can complete in April to help make the grass less patchy. Gardening expert Pim Dickson says you only need a common item to get the job done

As we move into spring, many homeowners are seeking straightforward methods to keep their lawn looking vibrant and healthy. However, you might not realise there’s an uncomplicated technique you can employ to revitalise your grass, requiring just a basic item to achieve it.

Specialists reveal various tips people can implement in spring to guarantee their lawns appear as immaculate as possible, but undertaking one gardening chore in April can prove crucial to how your garden presents itself throughout the remainder of summer. By heeding the guidance, you’ll discover what a significant difference it can make.

It’s not the sole adjustment you can implement either. There’s another straightforward task you can undertake to make your lawn appear more vibrant as well.

Fothergill’s Senior Horticultural Content Manager Pim Dickson recently outlined what people should do. Pim is worth paying attention to, as the company boasts thousands of social media followers.

You must take action immediately if you’re hoping to witness excellent outcomes. It’s essential to get started during the spring period.

Pim explained: “Think of lawn feed like a good breakfast; it sets your grass up for success. A spring feed will help repair any bald patches, encourage lusher growth and bring back that vibrant green colour that makes a garden look properly cared for.

“Re-seed any bald patches that raking may have exposed. Simply broadcast a few handfuls of lawn seed over the area that need a little help. This time of year, it should only require watering if we happen to have a prolonged dry spell and the ground looks like it might dry out.

“If you have a lot of birds visit your garden, then it may be sensible to hang up some deterrents to prevent them eating the seed and seedlings. Follow these straightforward steps, and you’ll have a lawn that’s ready for summer, whether that’s family barbecues, kids playing or simply somewhere nice to look at with your morning cuppa.”

He also offered some advice on mowing, adding: “When you’re itching to get the mower out for the first time, resist the urge to scalp it. Keep those blades set high, and your grass will thank you for it.

“Cutting too short puts stress on the grass as it recovers from winter. Instead, gradually lower the cutting height over several weeks. Your reward will be stronger roots and a thicker lawn.”

How to use it

To get the most out of grass seed, begin by preparing your soil thoroughly. Loosen the top two to four inches and remove any debris.

Ensure the surface is level before distributing the seed evenly, either using a spreader or by hand. Ideally, finish by covering it with a thin layer of soil or straw.

It’s crucial to maintain moisture in the area by watering daily until it becomes established. You’ll also need to avoid walking on the grass for several weeks while the seeds take effect.

The secret is avoiding overuse, as excessive seed can produce weak, competing grass growth. Nevertheless, when applied properly, it can result in a fuller lawn and assist with repairs.

If you apply it twice annually, you should also observe a much more vibrant green colour. Eventually, it can also help to combat weeds.
