Making a difference beyond the day job

Mr Anarfi: My professional role and environment provide a platform for me to role model that it is possible to aspire to the most senior positions in business regardless of your background. Even though I am very often “the only” in the senior room where decisions are being made, my position allows me the opportunity to bring diversity of thought to discussions and ensure that an inclusive culture is being set for underrepresented groups.

Unfortunately, it can also be a tiring and time-consuming passion to pursue, and responsibility to bear – championing the cause is done in addition to my day role, which itself is very demanding.

Mr Williams: Your professional environment can play a really crucial role in either enhancing or limiting your capacity to effect change, because it can be dependent on the views of other stakeholders, which at times may not be as open to change as perhaps is needed.

As a leader, I feel it often comes down to having the confidence to take up space, ask the right questions and share insights in a way that resonates with others. Developing this skill can take years, as it requires both experience and self-assurance.

Ms Idemudia: As a senior leader, you constantly need to think about where your purpose, passion and day job intersect. I have found this to be an effective way of adding value and perspective.

As an example, when working on a significant transformation project or thinking about our coverage models and strategies in different regions, I also pause to think about the individuals who are covering and advising our businesses, their aspirations and how they are being developed and valued. I spend a lot of time getting to know my colleagues beyond just headcount numbers so that I can advocate for them when the right opportunity appears.

What is your advice for people to want to make a difference?
