‘No chance!’: Peter Schmeichel is shot down live on TV by Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle on Man United’s hopes of signing Lewis Hall

Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle hilariously dismissed Man United‘s hopes of signing Lewis Hall live on TV.

Speaking in the aftermath of his side’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool at St James’ Park on Sunday, Jaissle was conducting a pitchside interview with Viaplay.

As the conversation turned to the transfer market, Jaissle was pressed on whether he hoped Newcastle would do any further business during what has been a turbulent summer for the club.

Key players Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon have already departed, and there has also been speculation over the futures of other stars including Joe Willock, Tino Livramento and Hall.

And when questioned on his aspirations to sign more players, Jaissle responded: ‘I think it will be a stressful period for the sporting director, because we have some needs.

‘But if we bring players in maybe there will also be some players who go out.’

Former Man United keeper Peter Schmeichel, who played 398 times for the club, then cheekily said: ‘We are looking at your left back.’

That comment was in reference to Hall, with United having made enquiries for the defender this summer.

But to that, Jaissle said: ‘No chance, no chance,’ as he chuckled.

Daily Mail Sport reported earlier this month that Hall has been on United’s radar as it is clear they need to strengthen that position, with Luke Shaw, now 31, in the final year of his contract while youngster Harry Amass has been told he may be best leaving for first team football.

Hall, 21, has three years left on his current deal, and would require a substantial fee, with the defender now seen as one of Newcastle’s biggest assets after joining from Chelsea in 2023.

United, meanwhile, feel they are light in the position. Shaw started all 38 Premier League matches last season, though there is no obvious back-up, with Patrick Dorgu viewed as a winger by Michael Carrick.

Jaissle’s comments came after an impressive opening day performance from Newcastle as they drew 2-2 with Liverpool.

They had looked set for all three points after goals from Anthony Elanga and Joe Willock had them 2-1 ahead, but Dominik Szoboszlai equalised with a penalty in the 99th minute.

‘In the end, I am a bit disappointed,’ the German said after the game. ‘But there is also some brightness, definitely, because the guys were doing an amazing job for over 90 minutes.

‘We are a young squad and they really left their heart on the pitch and this is something we can build on.

‘I’m proud. We are proud to see a unit on the pitch. The guys were trying to do it the intense way that we wanted to play. Front-footed, vertical in our approach.

‘This, after such a short amount of time, I’m really happy. I felt the goosebumps straight away. You get energy from the stands and you just want to deliver it on the pitch. This synergy will be something special.’
