Best desks to upgrade your home office in 2026

Whether it’s finding an alternative to the kitchen table or sofa, or a stack of carefully arranged boxes in your newly acquired office, the best desk is an essential for any workplace. As I started this roundup, I was surprised by the sheer number of desks out there, and the specialists who cater to all styles of workspaces, be that in the home or the office. In this guide, I’ve tried to test a good selection from across the board.

What I wasn’t expecting was that the more expensive desks in the test, those from Swyft, Herman Miller and Oakywood, all proved quick to put together, and were simple by design, ultimately providing ultra-solid bases for your work. The Oakywood and Swyft stood out as two that I wouldn’t mind in any room of my house, and once again, the finish and design of the Oakywood classic desk, with its focus on pure simplicity and natural materials, really stood out.

However, that simplicity won’t be for everyone, and at the other end of the scale, I looked at two flat pack options. These did admittedly take a while to construct, but with a mix of wood and metal gave a really nice effect, perfect for any home office, with one featuring a small built-in cupboard and the other a set of drawers.

Then I delved into the more corporate world and looked at some of the dedicated professional options: simple, strong, and, considering the price, perfect for one-off units or for furnishing an entire office.

All but one of the desks on test are a permanent fixture; however, for good measure, I’ve also included a folding desk. This is one that you can have out for work in a spare room when you need it, and then fold away when you don’t, returning your room to a living, rather than work, space.

In this roundup, I have filtered through the options and given you my pick of the best desks for a variety of work situations, budgets, and styles.
