Refreshing your bedroom with new bedding is one of the easiest ways to make the whole space feel transformed. And while nothing quite beats the luxurious feel of bamboo sheets or a crisp linen set, you don’t necessarily have to spend a fortune to give your bed a stylish update.

In much the same way supermarkets have become unexpected destinations for fashion, they’re now making serious strides in homeware, too. Shoppers who once popped in for groceries are increasingly leaving with trend-led clothing, furniture and soft furnishings that wouldn’t look out of place in far pricier stores. The gap between supermarket collections and premium brands has never felt smaller, with many retailers focusing on elevated design, quality fabrics and timeless finishes at accessible prices.

Marks & Spencer is a prime example, offering bedding with thoughtful details such as contrasting stripes, embroidered trims and delicate floral prints that give a boutique feel without the designer price tag. Habitat at Sainsbury’s has also carved out a reputation for contemporary homeware, with modern colour palettes, playful patterns and relaxed washed textures that bring an effortless look to the bedroom.

To see whether these supermarket buys live up to the hype, I tested a range of bedding sets from across the high street, assessing everything from quality and comfort to design, durability and ease of care. The result is a shortlist of options that prove you don’t need to splash out for a bed that looks – and feels – expensive.
