It’s not uncommon to lose your appetite when the weather gets warmer – but despite the temperature outside, it’s important to fuel your body with healthy foods and stay hydrated

As the country starts to warm up again for the start of the school holidays, many people will be looking at ways to keep cool as the temperature rises. According to The Met Office, more prolonged dry and sunny conditions are expected in early August, with high pressure expected to build – especially across southern areas of the country.

Forecasters say the second week of the month could bring a more settled pattern nationwide, with above-average temperatures and the potential for warm to hot spells, particularly in the southeast. Meanwhile a temperature anomaly map by WXCharts shows much of the southeast – including London – as well as parts of the southwest will be hotter than usual for the time of year on August 9.

To help out, TikTok channel @nextguthealth has shared five foods that can help you cool down during a heatwave while keeping your body hydrated in the process.

Watermelon

The video starts by highlighting the benefits watermelon can bring during the warmer months, saying: “High water content (over 90%) helps keep you hydrated.

“Contains electrolytes like potassium to support fluid balance. Rich in antioxidants like lycopene, which may protect against sun damage.”

You could enjoy watermelon on its own or alongside other fruit in a fruit salad.

Cucumber

Cucumber can soothe overheated skin thanks to its anti-inflammatory compounds, the video claims. As it is made up of 96% water, it’s extremely hydrating, low in calories, and could make a light refreshing snack.

You could easily add cucumber to a salad or create your own cucumber-based dish with it. Alternatively, you could enjoy a cucumber alongside healthy dips such as hummus.

Coconut water

The video adds: “Coconut water is a natural source of electrolytes (potassium, magnesium, sodium). It rehydrates faster than plain water in some cases, and supports muscle and nerve function under heat stress.”

Coconut water is available in most supermarkets and could be enjoyed as a nice, refreshing beverage on a warm day.

Leafy greens

Everyone knows it’s important to ‘get your greens’ – and this is especially true during a heatwave. The video says: “Leafy greens are high water content, especially iceberg and romaine.

“They provide essential minerals and vitamins lost through sweat. They’re easy to digest, keeping your body cool and light.”

To make sure you hit your intake, you could prepare a salad or add a side salad to your favourite summer dish.

Berries

Berries are packed with antioxidants that protect cells from heat stress, making them a perfect food to eat in warm weather.

The video says: “They’re hydrating and rich in vitamin C, which supports skin and immune health. They’re naturally sweet and low in sugar compared to processed snacks.”

You could incorporate berries into your morning breakfast or snack on them throughout the day when you have a small gap to fill in your stomach.
