Sunday has been dubbed ‘First Cut Sunday’ as it’s the earliest day to cut the lawn

This Sunday, March 23, has been named ‘First Cut Sunday’ as it’s the day when many gardeners will get the lawnmowers out of the shed and tackle the grass for the first time after a long winter.

The term was coined by lawnmower makers Flymo and it’s likely the air will soon once again be filled with the hum of homeowners cutting the grass now that spring is finally here.

But experts have also warned that it’s better to go by the weather before deciding to make the first cut rather than following a set date. Dobbies plant buyer Nigel Lawton said gardeners should instead go by the temperature outside.

He suggests waiting to do your first grass cut until the mercury hits 7C. With that in sight, it’s essential to have the right kit if you want your lawns to be the talk of the neighbourhood for the right reasons.

One essential tool that will give your grass a great finish is a strimmer, also known as a grass trimmer. These nifty tools cut the edges of your lawns, get into tight spaces and can cut grass around obstacles such as trees and fences.

They are also used to create clean lines alongside flowerbeds and paths. The strimmer’s head contains a spool of line, which is spun at high speeds to cut the grass and weeds.

With that in mind, Amazon is offering a 15 per cent discount on the WORX WG163E 18V Cordless Grass Trimmer just in time for grass cutting season. The retail giant has slashed £20 off the £129.99 RRP, bringing it down to £109.99.

The WORX strimmer is described as “lightweight and powerful” and has Command Feed technology which extends a fresh line with the touch of a button, allowing you to effortlessly keep strimming.

It also changes from a grass trimmer to an in-line wheeled edger in seconds which helps you to get neat edges on your lawns and can also help tackle longer grass. And the head angles at 90° to allow it to be used under garden furniture too.

The WORX Cordless Grass Trimmer has an adjustable handle allowing you to strim your garden comfortably and weighs just 1kg. And because it’s cordless you don’t have to worry about it reaching the furthest parts of the garden.

It comes with two batteries and customers have been impressed with their life span and praised the strimmer’s ease of use and functionality.

On Amazon, it has nearly 1,500 ratings with an average 4.5 star rating. One chuffed buyer said: “Has saved so much time doing the edges. Looks so professional. Like the soil edges are getting a professional trim and the grass the same. Garden constantly getting admired. Woohoo!”

Another raved: “The very convenient press button on the handle enables you to feed out more line as it wears shorter and you can do this on the move.” And someone else agreed saying: “The command feed is a joy to use and saves a lot of frustration.”

One customer was pleased at the cheaper refills. Headlining his review ‘Super Strimmer’, he said: “This strimmer is fantastic. Uses plastic cable instead of plastic blades that other models use, so really easy to refill and cheaper.”

And Mr X said: “This Worx strimmer is in a different league completely, it’s lightweight, well balanced, and extremely well made.”

One customer was however confused by the mechanics of the strimmer saying: “I’ve no idea how the auto spool facility works. The instructions that come with it are incredibly basic.” Another said they could not register their warranty on the website.

If you’re looking for a cheaper option, B&Q has the Bosch EasyGrassCut 26 280W Corded Grass trimmer which is down from £39 to £34 at the moment. In the same price range is the Hyundai 250W Corded Electric Grass Trimmer which is priced at £29.99 on the company’s website.

Or you can grab the WORX WG163E 18V Cordless Grass Trimmer, here.
