Dog health alert as owners urged to follow ’20 minute eating’ rule during heatwave

With temperatures rising, a common feeding habit could leave dogs feeling unwell

Dog owners are being urged to make one small change during hot weather after experts warned a common feeding habit could make pets unwell.

Most people know dogs can struggle in a heatwave, but it’s not only walks and water bowls that matter. Leaving food sitting out in high temperatures can quickly become a problem, even if it looks and smells fine.

With the UK seeing spells of summer heat, some parts reaching the mid-to-high 20s, animal experts say owners should be extra careful about how long meals are left down, particularly wet food.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) warns that wet dog food shouldn’t be left out for more than 20 minutes in warm weather. The reason is simple: heat creates the perfect conditions for bacteria to multiply, raising the risk the food becomes unsafe.

If your dog doesn’t finish their meal, the advice is to remove the bowl after around 20 minutes and bin any leftovers, rather than leaving it for later. Bowls should also be washed regularly to stop bacteria building up between feeds.

The RSPCA has also reminded owners to take added precautions when temperatures rise. That includes keeping fresh drinking water available at all times and avoiding leaving food in direct sunlight, as dogs can be more vulnerable to heat-related illness during hotter periods.

Dry food can last longer than wet food once served, but experts still say it should be stored properly in a cool, dry place, as heat and humidity can affect freshness if it’s left exposed.

Eating spoiled food can cause dogs to become ill, with symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach upset. Puppies, older dogs and pets with existing health conditions may be at greater risk.

Alongside changing feeding habits, owners are being encouraged to help dogs stay cool by offering shade, avoiding walks during the hottest part of the day and keeping water topped up. The RSPCA also warns never to leave dogs in parked cars, even briefly, as temperatures can rise dangerously fast.

As the warm weather continues, experts say sticking to the “20-minute rule” is a quick, easy step that could help keep dogs comfortable, and avoid a miserable bout of sickness.
