We tested M&S’s candles that look just like its iconic cocktail cans

Reading Time: 6 mins read

From caterpillar-inspired cakes to its ever-surprising flavour combinations and seasonal launches, M&S is good at thinking outside of the box. Now, the supermarket has put its signature quirky twist on home fragrance, by launching a set of scented candles that look just like its popular canned cocktails including mojito, pina colada, pink passion star martini and gin and tonic.

The ‘tinnies’ have become a staple of pre-picnic and party supermarket runs, train journeys and picky bit spreads, so the design of the candles alone is probably enough to make a lot of M&S cocktail fans curious. But beyond the playful aesthetic, are they simply a novelty? Would cocktail-inspired candles really carry notes of gin or rum? Keen to find out, I got my hands on the set to test their scent throw, potency and overall fragrance.

All of the candles feature a glass design and a pop-off lid, and boast a burn time of up to 100 hours. Whether you’re partial to a mojito, a fan of a pina colada, or you simply love the fun, playful design of the candles (or know someone who would), keep reading for an honest review.

 M&S mojito tinny scented candle

M&S mojito tinny scented candle

Housed in a green glass jar that features a design very similar to M&S’s canned mojito (£2.50, Ocado.com), this candle is fresh, aromatic, zesty and a little bit sweet (it really does smell like a mojito). However, the throw and potency is a little underwhelming. The supermarket’s mojito tinned cocktail contains lime juice, mint flavourings and white rum, and, here, while subtle, the mint and lime come through. There’s even depth and warmth from a faint hint of rum – although, admittedly, that may simply come from the classic association of lime and mint with rum, since those ingredients are so often paired together. If you’d like an uplifting, subtle scent, you’ll like this one.

As with all the candles in the range, M&S says this candle has a burn-time of up to 100 hours. Although I haven’t had time to test this claim, I believe it – the candles are large, with a long wick.

M&S pink passion star martini tinny scented candle

M&S pink passion star martini tinny scented candle

This scented candle features a pink and gold design that’s very similar to M&S’s pink passion star martini cocktail (£2.50, Ocado.com).

The sweetest and possibly strongest of the bunch, this smells as you might expect – tropical, juicy and bright. The original cocktail contains raspberries, passion fruit juice, vanilla and vodka. Here, the smell is passion fruit and raspberry heavy, and the sweetness is very moreish. While it’s hard to say whether the warmth of vodka comes through, the overall effect is very much reminiscent of the cocktail. Plus, the throw is fairly strong. Come back into the room after it’s been burning for a couple of minutes and you’ll definitely pick up on the passionfruit.

Again, like the other candles in the range, it is a little artificial-smelling. Although I initially wondered whether it might become a little sickly – given how sweet it smelled when opened – it was far less overpowering than I’d expected once lit. That said, it will definitely appeal to anyone with a sweet tooth.

M&S pina colada tinny scented candle

Featuring yellow and turquoise glass, this looks just like the M&S pina colada tinned cocktail (£2.50, Ocado.com) , which includes a mix of pineapple juice, white rum and coconut milk. And, as you might expect, the candle smells fruity, tropical and sweet. There’s a subtle creaminess to it, too, from the coconut, so it’s nice and balanced. I was impressed with the throw, with the fruity scent filling the room quickly without getting to be too much.

M&S gin and tonic tinny scented candle

M&S gin and tonic tinny scented candle

Taking inspiration from M&S’s gin and tonic (£2,50, Ocado.com), this is the freshest-smelling candle of them all, and the one I’d recommend if you prefer a clean scent over a sweet or fruity one. The smell is herbaceous and slightly medicinal with a hint of citrus, so it’s definitely reminiscent of gin and tonic. That being said, it’s a little artificial-smelling, which not everyone will like. The wax smells stronger than the candle once lit and it has quite a weak throw.
