DWP set to abolish two benefit schemes in early 2026

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed that two benefit schemes are being abolished next year amid ongoing efforts to move ‘legacy benefits’ onto the Universal Credit system.

From April 1, 2026, people will no longer be able to claim Income Support (IS) and Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) in the UK, with people instead transitioning to the Universal Credit scheme.

Those who are still on the IS and JSA schemes have been told they will receive a letter requiring them to start the migration process to begin claiming Universal Credit.

Although the DWP believes no one will be claiming those benefits by April, last month, The Independent revealed that more than 80,000 people were still receiving them earlier this year.

Addressing news of the upcoming migration, Sir Stephen Timms, minister for Social Security and Disability, said that his department is helping to make sure that everyone gets the necessary support in transition to the new benefit system.

“Over 220,000 vulnerable people have now got the specialist support they need to move to Universal Credit – proof that we’re delivering a social security system that has respect at its heart,” he said.

“We’re making sure no one gets left behind, offering real help throughout the process via our helpline, online guidance, and Citizens Advice support.

“If you get that letter asking you to move to Universal Credit, don’t ignore it – it’s crucial to respond, so you can keep getting the support you’re entitled to.”

What is Universal Credit?

Universal Credit is a monthly benefit that is paid to people who are on low incomes or unemployed, helping them cover essential living costs.

It is replacing several other benefits, such as housing benefits, income support and job seekers allowance, and working tax credits.

How to move over to Universal Credit?

People currently receiving various benefits in the UK will now be receiving migration letters, which explain how they can move over to Universal Credit.

According to the UK Gov website: “To continue getting financial support, you must claim Universal Credit by the deadline date in your letter.”

You can claim Universal Credit online or over the phone, and you’ll need to claim within 28 days or you will be required to start the process again.

During the process, you’ll need to verify your identity and provide documents to support your claim.

Once you make a claim, your other benefits will stop as they are being replaced with this new system.

For more information on the migration process, visit the UK Gov website for details about how to move over to the new system and start your claim.
