I tried bourbon biscuits from Aldi, Lidl, Tesco and Sainsbury’s — one was ‘addictive’

From texture to taste and chocolatey richness there is a lot to consider when choosing the perfect bourbon biscuit

While the debate over which is the best biscuit remains unsettled, the bourbon is a firm favourite across many homes in the UK. Much like a custard cream it is a staple of any British biscuit tin.

However, despite the seeming uniformity of this classic biscuit, not all bourbons are made equal. With this is mind, reporter Ray Bonsall set out to test bourbons from four of the UK’s biggest supermarket own brands including Aldi, Lidl, Sainsbury’s and Tesco.

Here’s what Ray thought based upon texture and taste — and the one supermarket that was a clear winner, reports Liverpool Echo.

Sainsbury’s

Ray said: “The Sainsbury’s biscuit had a satisfying texture but lacked it flavour. The biscuit was less sweet and also blander than others I tried. The biscuit had a good crunch if that’s your thing (it was good for tea dunking) but wasn’t as light or crumbly as the other biscuits.”

Tesco

Ray’s first impression of the Tesco bourbon was the packet size, which is bigger than other supermarkets, but comes in at the same price per gram.

Ray said: “The Tesco biscuit was sweeter and more flavourful than the Sainsbury’s version and had a pleasant light texture with a good crunch. The Tesco biscuit had a paler colouring than the other biscuits and while it was a decent choice it didn’t have quite the chocolatey kick of some other options.”

Aldi

Ray thought the Aldi version was “less crumbly” and was a “more solid biscuit than Lidl’s version however it had a lovely and very chocolatey filling”. Ray added: “Overall for the texture, crunch and sweetness of the chocolate inside this was one of the top choices, though not quite a winner.”

Lidl

Finally, Ray said Lidl’s biscuit “boasted a sweet filling and an impressive level of chocolate flavour”. Ray added: “The biscuit was more rounded with a light crumbly texture, but still held up well in the tea dunk test. These were the most addictive and left me wanting to devour the entire pack. In conclusion, Lidl’s biscuit was the undisputed champion.”

All biscuits had the same price per 100g, with all except Tesco priced at 43p for a 200g packet. Tesco offers a 296g packet for 65p.
