Budding bakers, you’re in for a treat with perhaps the simplest yet most delectable chocolate cake recipe of all time. No more dry, lacklustre cakes or overly fudgy disasters, BBC Good Food has come to the rescue with their five-ingredient, flourless chocolate delight that’s claimed to be “delicious”.

According to the recipe notes: “You are just five ingredients away from the most delicious, fudgy, flourless chocolate cake you have ever tasted.” And if that hasn’t tickled your taste buds enough, it’s a doddle to bake in under an hour and won’t stretch your purse strings at less than 80p a serving.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 250g dark chocolate, broken into chunks
  • Six barn-laid eggs, yolks and whites separated
  • 250g caster sugar
  • A dusting of 60g cocoa powder

Method:

Firstly, melt your butter and choc together either over simmering water or give them a whirl in the microwave, then let it all cool down.

Get your egg yolks whipped up with the sugar until they’re looking pale and thick – we’re talking a solid three minutes. Then, ever so gently, blend in the melted chocolate mix and sifted cocoa powder, reports the Express.

Next step: whip those egg whites up using an electric whizzer till they’re forming stiff peaks like little snowy mountains. Fold these gently into your chocolate concoction, do it a bit at a time to keep everything light and airy.

When it’s all mixed in lovely, tip it out into your tin, smooth it over, and pop it in the oven. You’ll want to give it 35 to 40 minutes – just until it’s nicely risen and has a bit of a wobble in the middle when you take it out.

Allow the baked cake to cool on a wire rack, but don’t fret if it dips slightly in the centre. Serve it warm or cold with dollops of ice cream, fresh cream or crême fraîche if you like.
