Linen bedding is beloved for being breathable, soft and luxurious. But it doesn’t come cheap, and is often significantly more expensive than its cotton counterparts, so it’s worth taking the time to care for it properly. With the right approach, linen can last for years.

Unlike some other fabrics, linen becomes softer with each wash, yet it can also be prone to shrinking, creasing and wear if it’s not treated properly. Knowing how to wash, dry and store it correctly can make a noticeable difference to its longevity and comfort.

From choosing the right temperature and detergent to understanding when to air-dry versus tumble-dry, small adjustments in your routine can help keep your sheets feeling new for years. To keep your linen bedding in good condition, I spoke to a bedding expert to find out how to care for linen bedding properly.

How often should you wash linen bedding?

According to Christina Heiser, content director and in-house expert at mattress brand Saatva, linen bedding should be washed every seven to 10 days. “During warmer months, or for people who sweat heavily, have allergies, or sleep with pets, washing once a week helps remove sweat, body oils, allergens, and other buildup that can accumulate over time,” she explains.

How to wash linen bedding

Heiser says that linen bedding should be washed separately from any towels or heavier garments, as this can cause friction and wear. Start by removing the bedding and shaking it out to remove any loose dust or debris. Wash it using a mild, gentle detergent, avoiding any harsh chemicals or bleach.

It’s best to wash in cool or lukewarm water, she adds, ideally between 27C and 40C. And avoid overloading the washing machine so that the fabric can move freely.

Can linen bedding be tumble-dried?

Linen bedding can be tumble-dried, but only on a low heat setting. Heiser says: “High heat should be avoided because it can damage fibres, increase wrinkling, and shorten the lifespan of the fabric. Many linen enthusiasts prefer a combination approach of air drying until slightly damp, then finishing in the dryer on low heat for added softness”.

How should linen bedding be stored?

Linen should be stored in a cool, dry space with good airflow, Heiser says. While a dedicated linen closet is ideal, any dry storage area works well. And always avoid storing linen in plastic bags. These can trap moisture. Instead, opt for breathable cotton storage bags or lidded storage bins.

Truly’s linen duvet cover took the top spot in interiors writer Emma Henderson’s review of the best linen bedding. “It feels much more luxurious than others in this review – I’d go as far as to say it felt more like high thread count Egyptian cotton than linen,” she wrote.

“I love the ladder effect around the edging, on both the pillow cases and duvet cover, which gives a really elegant look. Its simple design is timeless, and should fit into the style of any room. I love the housewife style of the pillowcases, which are sold separately, with wide borders that only add to the luxurious look and feel of this set.”
