An American woman tried making a chip butty for the first time but her attempt left people horrified, as she’d done one thing that they argued no Brit has ever done

The humble chip butty is a staple of British cuisine. It’s described in a multitude of ways in different parts of the country, largely thanks to the variety of names we have for a bread roll. But whether it’s a butty, a barm, a roll, a bap, or just a sandwich, it’s something most of us enjoy – especially if we’ve ordered fish and chips.

Now, an American who heard about the chip butty on social media has tried to make one for herself. However, her attempt has left some Brits horrified. While she made a valiant attempt, she did one thing that many argued no Brit would ever do – and they claimed it ruined the entire dish.

Logan Rae Hill began her TikTok video by stating she “really wants to try” a chip butty, so she had prepared all the ingredients so she could sample one in a clip.

But the video got off to a bad start immediately when Logan placed toast on her plate instead of bread, claiming that she had heard the “British comfort food” was made with “two slices of toast”. However, people were quick to point out a huge mistake.

Anyone who’s had a chip butty will know that it’s made from bread and not toast. After all, biting into the soft roll is seriously satisfying.

None the wise, Logan pressed on with her chip butty. She added the crinkle-cut chips she had cooked in the air fryer – as she doesn’t have a chippy nearby.

Logan went in with a healthy squirt of mayonnaise on the other slice of toast. She then closed the sandwich and squished it down, before cutting it in half and tucking in.

She said: “How could this not be good? It’s just potatoes and bread, you know? It looks good.”

But after taking her first bite, Logan said she had to be “honest” and confessed she wasn’t a huge fan. She said it wasn’t “bad”, but she found it was “dry” and admitted she probably wouldn’t be making it again.

Commenters on the post were quick to tell her that the reason it was dry was that she had made it incorrectly. They said a traditional chip butty is made with bread and not toast, and that chips bought from the chip shop are often a little softer than those you cook at home – especially when they’re covered in salt and vinegar.

One person said: “I speak for the whole of the UK when I say no one eats this.”

Another added: “Sorry, but this is all wrong. You need thick, fresh white bread, and proper salted butter spread on both sides. Thick cut, squishy chips doused in salt and vinegar, and normally, no sauce.”

A third posted: “Don’t get me wrong, everyone in the UK has their slight variation on how we like our chip butty, but we all collectively agree that you using toast is blasphemy.”

Logan later made another video where she took the criticism of her last attempt on board and made another chip butty – this time using bread instead of toast. She still insisted she had no choice but to use chips from the air fryer, as she doesn’t have access to the “incredible” chip shop chips that Brits would typically use.

She then added salt, but still omitted the vinegar. She didn’t add mayonnaise this time and chose not to swap it out for any other commonly used sauces, such as ketchup.

After tasting it, she said it was definitely better than her first attempt, but she still found it dry and believed it would only be good if she was “drunk” and hungry. But commenters still insisted she had done it wrong, and that it was dry because she hadn’t added vinegar or used softer chips.
