A slow-draining sink can be a frustratingly common problem. Fortunately, there’s a relatively easy fix. With faster-acting formulas dissolving blockages in minutes, the best drain unblockers restore water flow without the need to dismantle pipes or call a plumber. To find the best options, I’ve been testing a range of formulas in my own home.
But how do they actually work? Most sink and drain cleaners use a mix of chemicals – typically caustic soda, bleaching agents or both – that break down clogs caused by hair, grease, soap scum and food waste.
To blast through blockages, I tried chemical-based cleaners, but I also put some enzyme-based options to the test. The latter are ideal if you want to plump for more eco-friendly cleaning products, or if people in your home are sensitive to chemicals.
Ignoring a slow-draining sink or bath can lead to more serious plumbing problems down the line, including foul odours, water damage, and costly repairs. So keep reading for the best tried-and-tested options to avoid such headaches.

How I tested

I tested drain cleaners in multiple bathrooms and kitchens within an old Victorian house over a couple of months, allowing time for natural build-ups to accumulate. To ensure consistency, I added hair from a hairbrush and some extra soap and toothpaste scum to the sinks the day before using each unblocking product. You can read about my full testing criteria at the end of this article.
