Winter is the worst time of year for doing the laundry with damp clothes taking ages to dry and if left too long, they can end up smelling musty or even mouldy. Clothes dry quicker outside because the airflow gets rid of all the excess humidity.

This is exactly why dehumidifiers have become so popular in recent years and are one of the most useful items you can buy at this time of the year. However, dehumidifiers will only work if they are used properly and the experts at Eva Dry have cautioned that placing them against a wall will stop them drying your clothes, the Express reports.

They said: “Remember that dehumidifiers operate by sucking in the damp air. They then remove excess humidity and discharge the dehumidified fresh air. Therefore, if you place your dehumidifier against a surface that blocks the intake or exhaust vents, you reduce the positive effects of your unit.”

Where to place a dehumidifier to dry clothes quickly

It is extremely important to ensure there is lots of space around all sides of a dehumidifier.

If there isn’t, the moist air will not be able to circulate and humidity will still linger in a room.

Monitors are also more likely to overheat and in result break down if they are placed next to a corner or furniture.

Instead, make sure the dehumidifier is placed at least 15 centimetres inches away from all nearby surfaces as it needs to be in an area with lots of air flow to work effectively.

Place the dehumidifier backwards when drying clothes so that the warm-air outlet is facing the drying rack and the gentle heat speeds up evaporation.

Also make sure that all doors and windows are shut when using a dehumidifier, otherwise the device will have to constantly removing the incoming humid air and it will take longer for clothes to dry.

Where to palace dehumidifier to get rid of condensation

Dehumidifiers have multiple purposes as they are not only useful for drying your laundry but can also work to prevent condensation, which is when the hot air creates moisture by touching a cold surface.

Condensation build up on windows is very common and if left alone it can cause mould to quickly grow nearby where it can get under wallpaper or inside furniture.

However, a really simple way to fight condensation and keep it out of your home is to keep your dehumidifier in your hallway and other central areas where there is a lot of airflow which circulates evenly.

The expert added: “For dehumidifiers that cover large areas, it’s a good idea to place them somewhere central such as a hallway or landing.”

Simply leave your doors open and switch the dehumidifier on in the hall and it should quickly reduce the humidity in a home.

This method prevents condensation without running your dehumidifier for hours, helping you save energy and keep your home feeling a lot cosier.

Amazon are currently offering a Humizap dehumidifier, which is effective for dampness in the home and laundry drying, for just £99.99, down from £139.99

Meanwhile, for those on a tighter budget, Amazon also have the EasyAcc 1200ml Electric LED mini portable Dehumidifier for £46.99, down from £58.99 with over 4,466 glowing reviews.
