Quentin Tarantino is an iconic director with countless cinematic masterpieces under his belt. But there is one film that stands out beyond the rest. Released more than 30 years ago, and starring John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Uma Therman, among many others, the film has become known as a cult classic.
The film’s synopsis reads: “Vincent Vega (Travolta) and Jules Winnfield (Jackson) are hitmen with a penchant for philosophical discussions. In this ultra-hip, multi-strand crime movie, their storyline is interwoven with those of their boss, gangster Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames) ; his actress wife, Mia (Thurman) ; struggling boxer Butch Coolidge (Bruce Willis); master fixer Winston Wolfe (Harvey Keitel) and a nervous pair of armed robbers, Pumpkin (Tim Roth) and Honey Bunny (Amanda Plummer).”
The film I am talking about is, of course, Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction.
Pulp Fiction is an independent crime film written by Tarantino and based on a story he conceived with Roger Avary. The film’s title refers to the pulp magazines and crime novels that were so popular during the mid-20th century, largely known for their graphic violence and punchy dialogue.
Pulp Fiction has a near-perfect approval rating of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, with the critics’ consensus stating: “Injecting its compendium of crime tales with the patois of everyday conversation, Pulp Fiction is a cinematic shot of adrenaline that cements writer-director Quentin Tarantino as an audacious purveyor of killer kino.”
One fan described the film as a “masterpiece” and added: “A masterpiece of cinematic dialogue and storytelling. It explores some of the most intriguing character complexity and character development of any movie while not pretending to have a deep message, just an intriguing, entertaining movie.”
Another said it was a “classic” and added that it was “one of the best movies of all time”.
“Wow, what a crazy movie, but what else can I expect from Tarantino? He takes a sprawling, out-of-order narrative and weaves it with fantastic dialogue amongst unforgettable characters. You never know where this movie will go, which makes it so unbelievably special. I still have a soft spot for Tarantino’s work with Django, but this truly is his magnum opus, and I couldn’t believe how much time flew by watching this. It has the hallmark of everything Tarantino does and then some,” added a third.
Pulp Fiction is available to watch now on Amazon Prime.
