Reading Time: 4 mins read

Gloria Estefan is a force to be reckoned with. The Cuban-American singer, songwriter, actress, and businesswoman has had, and is still having, an incredible career. Estefan is an eight-time Grammy Award winner and a Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient, and has been named one of the Top 100 greatest artists of all time by both VH1 and Billboard.

Her record sales exceed 100 million worldwide, making her one of the best-selling music artists of all time. The contralto started her career as lead singer of Miami Latin Boys, which was later renamed Miami Sound Machine but would go on to release many, many more hits. Based on Spotify streams, I have compiled a list of the top tracks from the pop icons’ discography – here are the top 10.

10. Mi Buen Amor

The track’s synopsis reads: “Mi Buen Amor is a song by Gloria Estefan about different types of love, contrasting fleeting or difficult loves with the enduring, nurturing, and fulfilling love of a true partner. The song’s lyrics describe love as a complex journey, with some loves fading and others burning strongly, and it highlights the happiness and fulfilment found in the love described as “my good love”. The track is a danzonete ballad from her 1993 album Mi Tierra.”

9. Wepa

The song’s details read: “Wepa is a dance-pop song by Estefan that celebrates the joy of Latin rhythms and dancing. The synopsis of the song and its music video focuses on themes of unity, freedom, and letting go of worries to embrace the moment. The word “wepa” itself is a Spanish slang exclamation for excitement and joy, used to express celebration.”

8. Rhythm is Gonna Get You

A little bit about the record: “Rhythm Is Gonna Get You is a high-energy 1987 dance-pop song by Estefan and Miami Sound Machine, with lyrics about the irresistible and inescapable pull of music, dance, passion, and desire. The song’s energetic tempo and fusion of Latin percussion, electronic instrumentation, and catchy hooks are central to its theme, which suggests the power of rhythm to take over and captivate listeners, regardless of their resistance.”

7. Como Me Duele Perderte

The song’s details say: “Cómo Me Duele Perderte is about the pain of losing a loved one. The lyrics describe the profound heartache of a broken relationship, questioning how the other person could forget their past love and how it hurts her to lose them. The song is a salsa and bachata track from her 2000 album Alma Caribeña, and its accompanying music video features Estefan dramatically remembering her former lover.”

6. Don’t Wanna Lose You

The synopsis reads: “Don’t Wanna Lose You” is a song about a determined, committed love that is willing to work through challenges. The synopsis is about finding the courage to be vulnerable and honest in a relationship, urging a partner to “open your eyes and see who I am”. The lyrics convey a sense of perseverance and a pledge to be there forever, emphasising that the singer will not be the one to walk away.”

5. Mi Tierra

The song’s details reveal: “Estefan’s expressing deep longing and love for her Cuban homeland, a theme central to the album of the same name. The song is a musical tribute to Cuban music and culture, celebrating the singer’s heritage and the bittersweet experience of being an immigrant who cannot return to their place of origin. The song’s lyrics and musical arrangement, which features traditional Cuban son music, reflect this profound sense of nostalgia and connection to her “homeland”.

4. Hoy

The track’s synopsis reads: “Hoy by Estefan is a powerful love song about the anticipation of reuniting with a loved one, expressing deep connection, love, and longing. The lyrics use metaphors of a constant morning and a painting to represent the relationship, and the overall theme is hope and celebrating love to make it stronger. It was written by the Peruvian singer Gianmarco Zignago and became a global hit for Estefan, who recorded the song after hearing it and falling in love with it.”

3. Con Los Años Que Me Quedan

The song’s synopsis reads: “Con Los Años Que Me Quedan” is Estefan’s song about love, regret, and commitment, where the singer promises to spend the rest of her life proving her love and erasing past pain. The lyrics express a desire to make amends for past immaturity and make up for shortcomings, with the core message being a vow to show her true love with passion.”

2. El Ultimo Adios

The track’s summary reads: “El Último Adiós” is a song by a supergroup of Latin American artists, featuring Estefan, written by Emilio Estefan and Gian Marco to commemorate the 9/11 attacks and support the victims’ families. The song reflects on pain and loss but emphasises resilience, unity, and hope for the future. It was a charitable effort, with proceeds going to the American Red Cross and the United Way.”

1. Conga

The track’s synopsis is as follows:  “The song was inspired by the tradition of a “free-for-all” dance at Cuban parties, where the “Conga” beat originated. Released in 1985 by Miami Sound Machine, “Conga” became a global hit that introduced salsa to many English-speaking listeners.”
