Cancer Research UK has confirmed that it will permanently close 88 of its charity shops by May 2026 as part of a large scale restructuring aimed at streamlining its retail operations and safeguarding its ability to fund life‑saving cancer research.
The closures mark the first phase of a plan that will see nearly 200 stores shut over the next two years, as the charity responds to mounting financial pressures, including increased staffing costs, high street decline, and the growing dominance of online shopping.
The move is expected to save millions of pounds, which the charity says will be redirected towards cancer research.
Affected locations span the UK, from Aberdeen to Swansea, impacting both paid staff and thousands of volunteers.
But why exactly is Cancer Research closing some of its stores and which stores are shutting for good?
Why is Cancer Research UK closing some stores?
The charity says that a combination of long‑term financial pressures has made the move unavoidable.
Key reasons for closure include escalating operational costs, particularly increases in employer National Insurance contributions, inflationary pressures impacting everything from energy bills to stock and logistics and changing consumer behaviour.
Once the plan is complete, the core high street shop network will be reduced to about 320 high‑performing shops.
The online marketplace operated by Cancer Research UK will be closed in early 2026, meaning donated items will no longer be sold via external resale platforms.
In contrast, the charity intends to expand in other retail formats: 12 new “superstores” (large out‑of‑town or retail park style) are planned to open by 2028. These are designed to offer more space and value to customers.
According to the charity, the reorganisation is expected to free up approximately £12.4 million over the next five years, boosting the funds available for cancer research.
