Aussie sporting icon Troy Bayliss sustained a series of horrific injuries after he came off his bike during a ride, just weeks after he revealed he had got back on the bike after recovering from a broken ankle.

The 56-year-old three-time Superbike World Championship winner broke the news that he had suffered a crash on his Instagram account on Monday, scarily revealing that onlookers had found him lying prone on the racetrack.

He published an image of himself in hospital with a stream of cables and heart monitors attached to his chest.

The right side of his body was covered in excruciating-looking abrasions from skidding on the ground after coming off his bike.

Despite the nature of his injuries, Bayliss appears to be keeping a positive mood, holding aloft a peace sign with his right hand.

‘Went for a spin in the meat wagon yesterday,’ he captioned the image.

‘Thanks to the people who spotted me having a sleep on the track.’

He then revealed the gruesome injuries he sustained in the accident, stating he had broken seven ribs, his collarbone and suffered a punctured lung and was just ‘beat up.’

Few details have been shared on how and where the accident took place, as well as the bike he was riding.

The racing superstar, who hails from Taree in New South Wales, had only returned to riding on July 22, following his ankle injury, but he’ll now be sidelined again for another extended period.

Many from the motorsport world took to Instagram to send their well-wishes to the Superbikes star, with the father of Aussie Formula One star, Jack Doohan, Mick, commenting: ‘Speedy recovery mate, hope nothing too serious. Love bikes, but do not miss the body slam!!’

Former MotoGP star Marco Melandri wrote: ‘Damn!!!! Take care mate!’ while Max Biaggi said: ‘F***! Can’t believe!!!! Be strong my friend.’

Cal Crutchlow added: ‘Heal up mate and you be back to still getting after it again soon!!! Legend.’

In recent months, Bayliss has posted multiple photos on his Instagram, appearing to be riding dirt bikes.

He is widely hailed as one of Australia’s greatest ever motorsport competitors, having enjoyed a glittering career that spanned from 1997 to 2008, and included a brief stint in MotoGP.

He is also no stranger to injuries. In 2007, Bayliss was involved in a crash at Donington Park. He was later dubbed by motorsport outlet Visor Down as the ‘hardest man in motorcycle rating’ after he got his hand stuck under the bike before the vehicle smashed into him. Bayliss later required surgery to have his little finger removed and required surgery to repair a split testicle.

Despite the severity of the injuries, he would get back on the bike and the following year would claim his third World Superbikes Championship.
