Ottolenghi Ltd has issued a recall for its pita chips due to undeclared celery and mustard, posing a health risk to those with allergies. The Food Standards Agency has released a notice stating that the product could be dangerous for individuals allergic to these ingredients.

The warning said: “If you have bought the above product and have an allergy to celery or mustard, do not eat it. Instead, return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund (with or without a receipt).”

The affected snack is the Vadouvan Pita Chips in 150g packs, specifically with batch codes 290525 and 300525, and best before dates of May 28, 29, and 30, all in 2025.

Priced at £6.30 on Ottolenghi’s website, these spiced pita chips are marketed as “thin and crispy…the perfect vehicle for your favourite dips”, reports the Express.

Allergy symptoms can range from mouth itching and hives to stomach pain and nausea, with severe cases potentially leading to anaphylaxis.

The notice concludes by informing customers that “Ottolenghi is recalling the above product from customers and has contacted the relevant allergy support organisations, which will tell their members about the recall.”

The FSA is an independent, non-ministerial department, established in 2000 following several high-profile outbreaks of foodborne illness such as BSE (mad cow disease).

The FSA regularly puts out alerts for food recalls due to a variety of reasons and works across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

They said: “Our main objectives in law are to protect public health from risks arising from the consumption of food and generally to protect the interests of consumers in relation to food.”

The FSA also have a searchable function for all the food hygiene ratings for restaurants, cafes, schools and any business that distributes food.
