The maker of Grand Theft Auto has sparked outrage among fans after announcing yet another delay for the highly anticipated video game.

Rockstar Games revealed Friday that Grand Theft Auto VI will now be released on May 26, 2026 — a significant pushback from its previously expected launch this fall.

The company did not provide specific reasons for the delay but hinted that the game is not yet where they want it to be.

‘With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception,’ Rockstar said in a statement.

‘We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.’

Fans flooded social media with frustration.

‘GTA is delayed until 2026, I think my anxiety is coming back,’ one user posted on X.

Many are also questioning the long development timeline, noting that GTA V came out in 2013. ‘How does it take 13 years to release the next GTA?’ one fan asked.

This is a developing story… More updates to come.

‘We are very sorry that this is later than you expected,’ Rockstar said.

‘The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team.’

Rockstar released the trailer for GTA 6 in 2023, setting it in fictional Vice City, reminiscent of Miami that was last seen in the hit franchise’s 2006 installment.

The new game appears to stick close to its shocking roots, with the latest clip showing women having cash thrown over their bodies in strip clubs, posing in bikinis and twerking in skimpy clothes on top of moving cars.

Drug deals, violent shoot-ups and police raids also feature in the new trailer – as well as boat parties, arrests and illegal car stunt gatherings.

Some fans shared that they will not be purchasing GTA VI because of the delay, while others admitted they cried after hearing the news.

But Rockstar has a reputation of being a perfectionist when it comes to its games.

Straus Zelnick, CEO of parent company Take Two Interactive, previously said each new Rockstar game ‘needs to be something you’ve never seen before.’

Rockstar also thanked its fans on Friday, saying it appreciates their ‘patience as we work to finish the game.’
