Inside tiny UK airport on a beach which is overtaken by the tide twice a day

As the only airport worldwide that sees flights both take off and land from a sandy beach, a miniscule airport on a remote Scottish isle has become a renowned bucket list spot for aviation fans.

Located on the small Isle of Barra in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides, 40 miles off the West Coast of Scotland, Barra Airport’s runway even disappears twice a day, becoming lost to the tide.

Operating twice-daily flights to and from Glasgow, the distinctive airport has been in operation since 1974 and deals with up to 14,000 passengers a year.

The small flight hub also welcomes up to 60 private flights a year and its tiny terminal hosts free WiFi and car parking for up to 80 vehicles.

Described as a ‘breath of fresh air compared to other more conventional airports’, when the airport is not in operation and the ‘windsocks are down’, the public are even ‘free to walk on the runways which revert to a public beach enjoyed by surfers, dog walkers and families’.

Governed by the ebb and flow of the tide, the tiny runway was even named as the world’s most scenic airport in 2012, by private jet company PrivateFly.

In 2023, Nicky Kelvin, Editor at Large at The Points Guy, investigated Barra Airport in a fascinating video for a series he presents called Airplane Mode.

Speaking to the pilots that operate the Glasgow-bound Loganair flight, Captain Laura Roper said that there are ‘no lights or guidance’ for landing, with pilots entirely reliant on their ‘own judgement’.

Mr Kelvin, who described himself as a ‘diehard aviation geek’, told MailOnline it had been a ‘lifelong dream to travel to the incredibly unique airport of Barra’.

He added: ‘It’s the only commercial airport in the world with a beach as a runway, and provides for a very dramatic setting, not only because you are landing on the sand, but also because the runway disappears twice a day with the tide.

‘The timings of the flights need to be well planned in order to make sure there is enough space on the beach for the plane to land and take off again.’

While those onboard the plane take in the unique sights of the rural Scottish isle as they’re landing, the staff on the ground must undergo several unique checks to ensure the safety of passengers.

Steve Wilson, Barra Airport’s crew manager, took Mr Kelvin out onto the beach/runway, and showed him how they ensure the area is free of debris that may have been washed up with the tide.

He also revealed that the airport’s staff must check that there are no runway incursions from cockle pickers.

Reflecting on the experience of flying to such a unique airport, Mr Kelvin said: ‘It was an honour to go behind the scenes at Barra airport and live out my dream by landing, taking off and exploring all the aspects of the operation within the airport.’

Dubbing Barra as ‘Barrabados’, Mr Kelvin also spoke favourably about the ‘blue seas and white sands’ that visitors are welcomed to upon landing into the small beach that could be ‘mistaken for the Caribbean’.

But Captain Roper said that the two-mile stretch of sand, while picturesque, also helps ‘cushions the landing a little bit’.

Barra Airport is so picturesque that in August 2023 it even became the spot of a romantic proposal, with Stephen McCann popping the question to his fiancé Bridget Byrne, from East Dunbartonshire, on the runway.

Ms Byrne, who spotted it as their flight came into land, said ‘yes’ while still sat inside the aircraft.
