Wind farms will never be able to serve our energy needs

SIR – All sorts of “experts” are offering explanations for the recent epidemic of mental health disorders in children.

However, according to a recent joint report by two royal medical colleges, diesel may the problem.

Not only are particulates and nitrogen dioxide closely associated with delayed neurocognitive development and lower IQ in children, there is also extremely disturbing evidence of mental disorders in children being related to exposure to diesel fumes in pregnancy. These disorders include attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, anxiety and depression.

The Government must raise the price of diesel until it falls out of use. Otherwise families will leave London in droves, as my late wife and I did in 1981 to protect our children from exposure to lead in petrol.

Dr Robin Russell-Jones
Stoke Poges, Buckinghamshire

Yours insincerely

SIR – Charles Ives (Letters, June 5) is very fortunate in his MP, who helps him to deal with HMRC.

Emails to my MP elicit only waffle and veiled insults – if I receive a reply at all.

Hot on the trail of the traditional wallet

SIR – Christopher Macy (Letters, June 5) wonders if anyone in England still uses a traditional men’s wallet – and where such a wallet might be found.

I recommend a visit to a street market. My father did that, and found a stall with a variety of leather goods. He chose a soft brown wallet, which is still in good condition after five years.

Robert Bennett
Rugby, Warwickshire

SIR – I found a 4½ inch-by-3½ inch wallet at Selfridges and was assured that, at £320, it was something special.

In the end I bought a smaller back-pocket wallet at M&S for £12. Being retired, I now rarely wear a suit jacket.

John Gibson
Standlake, Oxfordshire

SIR – Mr Macy should search online for the exact term: “breast wallet”.

Richard Barker
London SE3

SIR – Mr Macy should avoid department stores and mail-order organisations, and seek out a small independent retailer specialising in leather goods. My own search recently ended at such a shop in Llandudno.

Edward Jenkins
Coventry, Warwickshire

SIR – When my wallet needed replacing, my wife very sensibly looked to the Queen for advice.

Launer, which manufactures her handbags, also makes gentlemen’s wallets, available in a range of sizes to suit a variety of pockets.

Peter Mullineux
Egham, Surrey

SIR – I have exactly the wallet Mr Macy is seeking. It is in excellent condition, with sections for pound and 10 shilling notes. He is welcome to it.

Preston, Lancashire
