Wicked Little Letters’ Hugh Skinner gets candid about dealing with trolls | Films | Entertainment

Reading Time: 3 mins read

Wicked Little Letters follows the outlandish scandal in a small British town after anonymous letters full of profanities and targeted hate begin getting mailed out. However, the sweary story is surprisingly based on real history.

While their characters deal with physical hate mail, the stars of the new British comedy revealed how they deal with digital hate and trolls as public figures in the 21st century.

Speaking to Daily Express on the red carpet ahead of the film’s release, Hugh Skinner declared with an utterly serious expression: “I send them s**t in the post, individually.”

Breaking out into a chuckle, the Witcher star clarified he has a far more non-confrontational way of dealing with trolls: “I’m not any social media, I have looked in the past but I just try not to.”

The Windsors star, who has been parodying Prince William since 2016, is no stranger to receiving criticisms online and while he’s taken steps to protect himself, he advised those still on social media to live by one simple phrase: “It’s the whole thing; ‘If you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say anything’.”

Ghosts actress Lolly Adefope, who plays Kate in the new comedy, was completely on board with her costar’s guidance.

She shared: “There’s a little phrase I use; #BeKind, leading with kindness, don’t say anything you wouldn’t say in real life…maybe even then take it back a bit.”

Anjana Vasan, who plays the first female police officer in the West Sussex Constabulary Gladys Moss, had some pointed advice for those who may be facing online negativity: “Block, mute, move on.”

Taking a softer tone, the Singaporean actress added: “If you need to take a break from social media, do it. You don’t need to be online all the time.”

DON’T MISS:

Elsewhere on the carpet, Hugh simply described his character, Constable Papperwick working alongside Gladys to solve the case, as “f***ing thick” and “somehow got a job with a bit of power and is absolutely loving it”.

The Mamma Mia star jokingly declared the character wasn’t too far a stretch for him as he feels similarly out of place “every single time” he walked onto the set with acting icons Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley.

He gushed over his costars and assured fans that the actresses are just as “amazing” and “lovely” as they appear.

Wicked Little Letters releases in cinemas on February 23.
