A cleaning enthusiast has revealed a simple trick to keep unwelcome spiders out of your home this spring. As warmer weather encourages us to open our windows, these eight-legged visitors may come seeking shelter or sustenance inside our houses.

TikTok user Georgia, also known as Clean with Georgia, suggested a natural deterrent to send spiders packing. In a March video, she shared several useful tips for warding off a variety of pests, pointing specifically to the benefits of peppermint oil in dealing with spiders.

Zoflora has pointed out that spiders dislike potent smells such as citrus, peppermint, tea-tree, lavender, rose, and cinnamon, possibly due to their method of smelling and tasting with their legs, which leads them to avoid surfaces with intense fragrances.

For those looking to repel spiders, Georgia recommends combining half a cup of water with 15 to 20 drops of peppermint oil, decanting it into a spray bottle, and applying it to any area within or around the house, particularly where they might enter, reports the Express.

For households without essential oils, Zoflora suggests using vinegar as an alternative spider repellent; although one should exercise caution when applying it to varnished surfaces or specific fabrics since vinegar could cause damage.

Georgia’s tutorial has captivated social media, amassing over 170,200 views, receiving 17,400 likes, and attracting 160 comments.

One Viewer Lynzie chimed in, commenting: “I’m going to try this.”

Mojo concurred, “1 thousand percent works,” while Alex shared their success: “This is amazing wow thanks for sharing, we put peppermint tea bags around our room, and TOUCH WOOD haven’t seen any spiders since….”

Astrid remarked, “Damn you really aren’t getting any spiders this year.”

Yet, experts caution pet owners against using peppermint oil. This essential oil poses a risk of toxicity when ingested or inhaled by pets, potentially resulting in severe health problems including liver damage, respiratory issues, and neurological complications.

Symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, weakness, and lethargy can also manifest.

For an alternative insect-repelling method, Georgia suggests deploying cinnamon sticks or oil at house entry points to fend off ants and spiders alike. “It’s a hot spice and they do not like it. This also deters ants as well, so it’s a great little hack,” she explained.

One can spray the solution on any parts of the house to maintain a spider-free environment.

Typically kicking off at the end of August and continuing until October, spider mating season sees male spiders leaving their webs in pursuit of female partners, driven indoors by the desire for warmth and suitable humidity levels.

However, the warmer months can also see the critters enter the home. Matt Forrest, managing director of CI Group stated: “As temperatures are dropping, spiders and other critics are crawling into homes in search of a mate and a more humid climate to thrive in.

“The most effective way to control the humidity in your home and keep critters at bay is through insulation.”
