A ‘hurricane-proof’ mansion built by a former insurance executive has been listed for sale for almost $6 million.

The French Tudor-style home in Wellington, Florida, survived recent Hurricanes Helene and Milton thanks to their renovations, which halved the owner’s insurance premium.

The property is listed for sale by One Sotheby’s.

Kishan Khanna and his wife, Diane, bought the 5,677-square-foot home in 2018 for $1.3 million.

They have since upgraded the house to be ‘hurricane-proof‘ and are now selling their newly upgraded home for $5.89 million.

Khanna told Mansion Global: ‘It’s a very strong, very beautiful door. It makes the entrance look really grand. The underlying [idea] was to make it safe and secure, but also to make it look better.’

Before the state of Florida was battered by recent destructive storms, the Khanna’s were originally set on reducing their insurance premium – which they accomplished.

‘We were able to cut the premium in half. I’m just patting myself on the back for doing that,’ Khanna said.

While Wellington was not in the direct path of Hurricane Milton, the home suffered minimal damage from one of the dozens of tornadoes created by Milton across Florida.

Houses across Wellington, however, were seen with shredded roofs, cars were destroyed, and homes were torn apart.

One Florida resident, Sam Rider, told The Palm Beach Post how his son clutched onto his arm when Rider was lifted in the air, off his feet, as the storm surged through his home.

Rider told the outlet: ‘It’s been very emotional. We survived. We had zero defense.’

Khanna, who has played polo since he was a boy in Indian boarding school, says that his favorite feature, however, is the 200-acre polo fields just in the backyard.

The private land offers bridle paths right outside the door, and a front row seat to the world-famous polo championships that take place in Wellington each year – attracting celebrities such as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and many other big names.

According to Mansion Global, Khanna is currently developing another equestrian estate that spans more than 60 acres, as well as owning a horse ranch in New Mexico and is ‘reluctantly’ selling this estate.
