Generally, those with a passion for gardening find themselves spending considerably less time tending to their plots during the winter months. This occurs because plants enter a dormant state in the cold or experience significantly reduced growth rates. As well as this, there’s far less requirement for weeding, pruning or deadheading tasks.

It’s advantageous to allow your soil to have a rest period during the chillier months. That’s because when soil is wet and cold, digging can break down its structure, leading to compaction and clumping. Good soil structure is essential for plant roots, drainage, and soil life.

Nevertheless, this doesn’t mean your gardening duties are completely finished. Actually, you ought to think about implementing the cardboard technique in recent weeks.

Horticulture content creator Amy May shared details about this method on YouTube, explaining precisely why everyone should contemplate placing cardboard in their gardens ahead of winter.

But what’s the reasoning behind this and how does the process function? Here’s all the essential information you need to know…

What exactly is the cardboard technique?

The cardboard technique, alternatively referred to as sheet mulching, represents an organic gardening approach utilised to control weeds, enhance soil condition, and establish new growing areas without any excavation.

It replicates natural cycles by building up layers of organic matter to develop nutrient-rich, productive soil.

Not only does it help control unwanted plants by preventing sunlight from reaching them, it also decomposes to nourish the earth beneath it.

As highlighted earlier, it’s wise to avoid excessive soil disturbance throughout winter. Therefore, this “no-dig” cardboard approach proves far less intrusive to your garden space.

So, in essence, cardboard sheet mulching is a sustainable, low-cost method to suppress weeds, enhance soil health, conserve water, and recycle materials in your garden.

Here’s how to do the cardboard method

1. Prepare the area – trim any tall weeds and grass, as well as removing obstructive debris, rocks or tree stumps.

2. Lay down the cardboard – you can re-use old cardboard packaging, but ensure to remove any tape, staples or unnatural glossy labels before placing the plain, brown cardboard down.

Overlap the edges by around four inches and make sure the material is wet to help it begin breaking down.

3. Add organic layers – add some compost, leaves or grass clippings on top of the cardboard.

Then, sprinkle over a layer of mulch to keep it all in place.

4. Leave the cardboard to do its job – apply the sheet mulching before winter begins and let it break down in the coming months.

You can water the layers to aid decomposition before spring planting season arrives.
