Interview with José Antonio Sánchez – Jennifer Lopez’s Massage Therapist, Former Therapist for RC Celta & FC Porto, and Director of ESPS

José Antonio Sánchez is a well-known figure in the world of manual therapy. He has worked with top-tier athletes from clubs like RC Celta de Vigo and FC Porto, and was even selected as Jennifer Lopez’s personal massage therapist during her tour in Galicia, Spain. He is also the only instructor authorized by the World Massage Federation (WMF) in both Spain and Portugal, and has directed the prestigious Escuela Europea Parasanitaria (ESPS) for over 20 years. The school offers university diplomas in collaboration with up to three institutions, including one from the United States.

In this exclusive interview, we focus on “chiromassage“, a Spanish massage technique with over a century of history that continues to grow in popularity as a tool for health and wellness.

What exactly is “chiromassage,” and how does it differ from other massage techniques?

Chiromassage is a manual massage technique based on a combination of precise movements applied to the muscles and soft tissues of the body. Unlike more passive or machine-assisted methods, chiromassage is performed exclusively with the hands, allowing for greater sensitivity, adaptability, and personalization of each treatment. We don’t rely on machines or excessive use of oils—just pure technique, exactly as it was envisioned by its creator, Dr. Vicente Lino Ferrándiz, in early 20th-century Spain.

What are the origins of this technique in Spain?

Chiromassage was born in Spain over 105 years ago thanks to the pioneering work of Dr. Ferrándiz, who combined Swedish massage principles, Eastern therapies, and Western medical knowledge. His method quickly became internationally respected, and since then, Spain has remained a reference point in the field of professional massage therapy.

What specific benefits does chiromassage offer?

There are many. From deep relaxation and improved sleep, to muscle pain relief, better venous and lymphatic return, nervous system stimulation, and even emotional well-being. It’s a safe, non-invasive, and incredibly versatile technique. That’s why it’s widely used not only in sports environments, but also in clinics, spas, wellness centers, and even hospitals in countries where I’ve had the privilege to train professionals.

How did you get started in chiromassage?

My first exposure was through traditional therapies passed down by elders. I was drawn to medicinal plants from a young age. At nine, I wrote a school paper about them in Galician, with the help of my grandmother María. That early curiosity led me to study naturopathy, which eventually brought me into the world of chiromassage.

It was a natural progression. I started working in spas and wellness centers, where I was fascinated by the direct connection between body and well-being. I later trained with top experts in naturopathy, osteopathy, and various manual techniques. But chiromassage has always been my foundation, my “home.” Its simplicity and therapeutic power captivated me. Over the years, I’ve applied it to elite athletes, global celebrities, and everyday clients—all with the same passion and precision.

You worked as Jennifer Lopez’s massage therapist in Galicia. Did you use chiromassage with her?

Absolutely. Chiromassage was the main technique I used on Jennifer and her team. It’s perfect for relieving muscle tension before and after a performance. Her physical routines are extremely demanding, and this technique gave her muscular recovery, relaxation, and postural balance. It was a highly professional and positive experience.

You’ve also worked with RC Celta, FC Porto, and national teams. What role does chiromassage play in professional sports?

A crucial one. In high-level football, every detail matters. Chiromassage helps prevent injuries, speed up recovery, and reduce downtime. It’s a key part of the multidisciplinary medical-sports team, and I’ve been fortunate to combine it with herbal poultices, cupping therapy, and other natural tools. I’ve worked with players who couldn’t even walk due to muscle tightness, and after one session, they were back on the field. It’s incredibly rewarding to see such immediate results.

What kind of training is needed to become a professional quiromasajista?

At the Escuela Europea Parasanitaria (ESPS), we offer comprehensive training, combining theory, clinical practice, and applied anatomy. Our courses are endorsed by universities and the World Massage Federation, for which I serve as the official instructor in Spain and Portugal. We aim to develop ethical, skilled, and passionate therapists. Chiromassage is not just technique—it’s empathy, sensitivity, and professionalism.

Do you see a future for chiromassage in mainstream healthcare systems?

Definitely. It’s already being integrated into health centers, private clinics, and hospitals. More and more doctors are recommending it as a complementary therapy. Scientific studies support its effectiveness in treating chronic pain, anxiety, fibromyalgia, and post-surgical recovery. We are at a pivotal moment for the official recognition of manual therapies, and chiromassage is the perfect ambassador.

Have you adapted the technique to meet new needs or trends?

Yes. I now combine chiromassage with visceral osteopathy, myofascial release, lymphatic drainage, and even reflexology. The core is always manual contact, but we’ve evolved with science and modern health demands.

What is your dream as a trainer and practitioner of chiromassage?

I want to see chiromassage recognized, valued, and officially regulated. I want my students to practice with confidence, legal protection, and professional respect. Above all, I want chiromassage to keep changing lives, just like it changed mine. From Jennifer Lopez to the anonymous client who comes in with pain and leaves feeling better—they all deserve the same care and commitment.

What would you say to someone who wants to start learning this technique?

Do it with your heart. Choose a training program that’s serious, up-to-date, and ethical. Don’t treat chiromassage as a passing trend—it’s a deep and rewarding professional path. And never underestimate the power of your hands: with knowledge and dedication, you can truly change lives.
