Looking for a cheap summer getaway? You’re in luck.

A charming and historic city in Germany is officially this year’s cheapest destination to fly to, according to Skyscanner.

The flight comparison website has revealed that the average cost of a flight to Bremen in summer is just £60, making it the ideal choice for a bargain getaway.

Located in north west Germany, Bremen has a historic city centre and a unique connection to fairytales.

A Brothers Grimm fairytale, the ‘Town Musicians of Bremen’ features four domestic animals who flee their masters and run away to become musicians in Bremen.

The story’s quirky characters are immortalized in a statue found to the west of the town hall. Visitors often queue to touch the donkey’s legs which are said to bring good luck.

And Bremen’s charming old town certainly looks like something out of a fairytale.

Known as the Schnoor (or string), the old town is a pretty maze of 15th and 16th century buildings.

A tourist writes on Tripadvisor: ‘The Schnoor is a truly enchanting neighbourhood that immediately captivated us. As soon as you enter these historic streets you can feel the special atmsophere.’

Another says: ‘Beautiful surroundings to walk through and enjoy. Plenty of small streets. Highly recommended.’

The city’s main square, Bremen Marktplatz, is just five minutes walk from the Schnoor and is dominated by the city’s Gothic Town Hall.

Bremen Town Hall holds UNESCO status and was built in 1405, serving as the seat of state government since then.

Tourists can opt for a guided tour of the Town Hall or stand outside to admire Bremen’s famous Roland statue.

Standing at just over 10 metres, the Roland statue is the largest free-standing statue remaining from the German Middle Ages. The Roland is a symbolic figure of the city’s freedom and makes for an attractive photo backdrop.

If you’re looking for something a little more contemporary, check out the Universum Bremen, a science museum that’s one of the city’s top attractions.

The museum is split into three subject areas – Technology, Human and Nature – and even has an outdoor zone.

A tourist says on Tripadvisor: ‘Whether young or old you can spend hours here. Great!’

And don’t leave Bremen without sampling one of its culinary delicacies. Bremen Tourism describes ‘Kohl und Pinkel’ (kale and sausage) as the city’s most ‘renowned speciality’. As its name suggests, it’s a traditional sausage dish served with locally grown kale.

For dessert, try Bremen Kaffebrot (coffee bread), a traditional treat usually eaten with coffee.

Made from sliced white bread, coated with butter, sugar and cinnamon, it’s toasted before being served.

It’s not just flights that are cheap as pintprice.com reveals that a beer in Bremen is just €2.99/£2.50 on average. Beck’s Brewery was founded in Bremen and tourists can go on a tour which includes a beer tasting. The city also a thriving craft beer scene.

Flight prices correct at the time of writing.
