Getafe will continue to profit from Mason Greenwood in the future if the player continues to move around different clubs, according to reports.

Greenwood, 22, recently secured his permanent £30m departure from Manchester United after signing a contract with the French side where he will play under former Brighton boss Roberto de Zerbi.

The English forward spent last season on-loan at LaLiga side Getafe after it was mutually agreed his future lay away from United following his previous arrest in January 2022.

It has since been revealed United have included a buy-back clause in his contract after sanctioning the sale to Marseille, with further details now showing Getafe still hold financial interest in the star as well.

His move to Spain last season saw Getafe negotiate a sell-on clause in the deal that means they will receive 20 per cent of any future sale, as reported by The Athletic.

His arrival at Marseille resulted in Getafe banking £5.34m with the unusual detail also meaning they will continue to profit from any further career moves, as will United.

The clause was negotiated by the Spanish side with United as they offered Greenwood a return to playing following his arrest for attempted rape, assault, and coercive control.

Greenwood denied any wrongdoing throughout the process and the charges and case against him were later dropped in February 2023 when key witnesses withdrew.

United carried out an internal investigation into the matter and it was later decided Greenwood would continue his playing career away from the club amid public outcry.

He subsequently went on to score 10 goals and register six assists on his way to being named Getafe’s player of the season during his solo season in Spain.

United banked a pure profit on the player following his sale to Marseille due to him coming through the club’s academy, but some critics were outraged and demanded the fee be donated to women’s charities.

The mayor of Marseille Benoit Payan also fumed over Greenwood’s arrival in France and attempted to try and block his arrival before the deal was eventually completed.

Greenwood later put pen-to-paper on a five-year deal with Marseille and was later officially presented at a press conference.
