Brentford 1-1 Man United – Premier League: Live score, team news and updates as Ajer responds to Mount’s stoppage-time strike to level in dramatic finish
Man United have a corner right at the end. Surely there isn’t another goal in this one?
It comes to nothing, but play is still ongoing. There are now handbags between Neal Maupay and Scott McTominay.
The Brentford striker loves to get involved in these kinds of things and he gets a yellow card for his part in the coming together.
GOAL!!! Brentford 1-1 Man United (Ajer 90+9)
It’s taken them until going behind to find their shooting boots, and its Kristoffer Ajer, the most unlikely of sources.
The ball is sent over the top to Ivan Toney who does brilliantly well to set up Ajer for a tap-in.
What an end to this match!
GOAL!!! Brentford 0-1 Man United (Mount 90+6)
Mason Mount has his moment!
I can’t believe it, Mount has won it right at the death. I did say United have the ability to do it.
It’s a proper smash-and-grab. Casemiro slides it across to Mount to fire across Mark Flekken which brings wild celebrations.
Brentford 0-0 Man United
Can United nick a late winner?
After clinging on for the majority of the game it would be just the kind of thing the Red Devils would do.
They are starting to press forward for it.
NINE added minutes
There are nine minutes of stoppage time, plenty of time for a dramatic end to the match.
There will probably be some more after this lengthy delay with Maupay and Dalot.
Brentford 0-0 Man United
Neal Maupay is already in the wars.
He is currently getting patched up for a cut on the head which I don’t know how he sustained.
Diogo Dalot is also being treated for something…
SUBSTITUTION: Brentford 0-0 Man United
A final throw of the dice from Thomas Frank.
Neal Maupay and Saman Ghoddos are on for the hosts in place of Keane Lewis-Potter and Mads Roerslev.
They have just a few minutes to try and find that winner.
Brentford 0-0 Man United
Nearly a massive mess-up by Lisandro Martinez on his return.
He gives it straight to Ivan Toney to race through on goal, but for some reason, he doesn’t pull the trigger.
After being cleared the ball is recycled and Casemiro gives away a free-kick in a dangerous area, which is fired over by Toney.
I wonder how many efforts Toney has racked up tonight?
YELLOW CARD: Brentford 0-0 Man United (Jorgensen)
The third yellow card of the match is handed out to Mathias Jorgensen.
they checked for a red card briefly, but that would have been very harsh.
Brentford 0-0 Man United
Andre Onana to the rescue again… just.
Keane Lewis-Potter whips the ball into a dangerous area and Onana manages to get his hands on to it. If somebody was there though they may have had a tap-in on the rebound.
The ball then ends up going out for a corner, which Ivan Toney ends up smashing over the bar.
SUBSTITUTION: Brentford 0-0 Man United
Marcus Rashford’s game is over and it’s now time for Mason Mount.
What a time it would be for the former Chelsea man to find his feet at the club.
OFF THE BAR! Brentford 0-0 Man United
Bryan Mbuemo has been electric since coming on and he has just crashed an effort off the bar after being fed over the top by Mark Flekken.
It just isn’t going to happen, is it?
DECISION STANDS! Brentford 0-0 Man United
As I said, it was very tight but VAR rightly rules it offside.
That would have been a perfect start from Mbuemo, it was a brilliant lofted ball.
DISALLOWED GOAL! Brentford 0-0 Man United
Nearly the perfect return to the GTech by Bryan Mbuemo.
He lofts over a beautiful ball and Ivan Toney fires home with aplomb first time, but the flag is up.
They are checking it though…it’s very tight!
SUBSTITUTION: Brentford 0-0 Man United
Once again there is an acrobatic effort from a Brentford player, this time it’s Keane Lewis-Potter.
His overhead kick flies just over the bar from close range.
Straight away Thomas Frank makes the change Brentford fans have been waiting for.
Bryan Mbuemo is on for Yoane Wissa, while Mikel Damsgaard also comes off the bench.
SUBSTITUTION: Brentford 0-0 Man United
Another defensive casualty for Manchester United.
Victor Lindelof can’t continue and it doesn’t look good – he is holding his hamstring. Lisandro Martinez comes on in his place, a welcome return from injury for the Argentinian.
His first job is to defend a couple of corners… what else would you expect?
Brentford 0-0 Man United
Scot McTominay fires over and then Brentford fans clock that Bryan Mbuemo is getting stripped and ready.
It brings a brilliant reaction.
Brentford 0-0 Man United
That would have been spectacular.
Mathias Jensen pings over a teasing ball for Ivan Toney who hits it first time and it flies narrowly over the bar.
That would have been one of the goals of the season.
Brentford 0-0 Man United
Keane Lewis-Potter heads wide following another fiery attack from Brentford.
I reckon this is destined to be 0-0. It would be one of the best stalemates I have ever watched if so.
HIT THE POST! Brentford 0-0 Man United
Yoane Wissa hits the post this time with an acrobatic effort, he seems to do so many of them to great effect.
That’s the third time the host have hit the woodwork in this game.
Following the effort Alejandro Garnacho is hooked for Antony.
DOUBLE SAVE! Brentford 0-0 Man United
The United goalkeeper makes a fantastic stop from Yehor Yarmoliuk’s strike from distance that looked destined for the bottom corner, before before getting up to deny Keane Lewis-Potter.
HUGE SAVE! Brentford 0-0 Man United
What a save from Mark Flekken.
I said I hadn’t heard Hojlund’s name, well, he has just forced a brilliant save from Flekken to deny a certain goal.
The Dane gets on the end of Bruno Fernandes’ pass with a first-time shot, but once again I have to say that is an incredible reaction stop.
United’s best chance of the night so far.
Brentford 0-0 Man United
Another chance goes begging for the hosts.
Yoane Wissa breaks from his own half but does not feed the ball to Ivan Toney and goes alone.
His effort is tame and dribbles wide. He should have passed.
Brentford 0-0 Man United
I think I have just heard Rasmus Hojlund’s name for the first time tonight, it has been hard for him to get a kick.
Anyway, United get the ball to Diogo Dalot who has another shot from outside the box which dips just wide of the post.
The visitors are starting to have more of the ball.
Brentford 0-0 Man United
That’s a bit better from the visitors.
Their captain Bruno Fernandes has a pop from distance, which is held by Mark Flekken.
It was a decent effort to be fair to Fernandes, he can hit them well at times.
Brentford 0-0 Man United
Brentford fans and players alike all believe they should have a penalty as Alejandro Garnacho takes out Vitaly Janelt on the edge of the area.
VAR quickly says no and we get on with it – the right decision.
Brentford 0-0 Man United
Brentford have carried on where they left off, winning another corner.
You guessed it, the corner came to nothing. The Bees need to start making the most of these set pieces – they are having so many.
SECOND HALF: Brentford 0-0 Man United
Man United have made a change, but it’s not Mason Mount, it’s Harry Maguire who comes on.
The Englishman comes on for Raphael Varane, surely this is a change due to injury.
No other changes to report, and the ball is back rolling again.
Time for Mason Mount?
Maybe Mount can be the man to change the game for United?
Look, I know he hasn’t been the best this season, but on his day he can really make an impact.
Man United need to change something, maybe they should turn to Mount.
United not with it
They might be level, but boy have Manchester United been poor.
After their storming win over Liverpool two weeks ago, I expected them to come out firing and full of confidence. They have been the opposite.
They have looked at 50%, not making a game of it whatsoever.
What can Erik ten Hag change at half-time?
WATCH: Toney hits the post
This was the best chance of the lot from Brentford.
When Ivan Toney goes through like he did here, you’d expect him to score, but this time around that wasn’t the case.
Will Brentford rue their missed chances
Brentford have been the better side by some margin.
However, they go into the break wondering how they haven’t scored in this match.
They have hit the woodwork twice, and Ivan Toney has been causing all sorts of problems for the United defence. You have to wonder though, will they regret their many misses.
United won’t be that poor in the second half, you’d expect.
HALF-TIME: Brentford 0-0 Man United
For a match with no goals at half-time, it has had a lot of action.
Most of that action has been in and around the Manchester United goal, they have done a lot of defending.
Brentford have hit both the post and the bar through Ivan Toney and Mathias Jorgensen.
However, despite having all the ball and the chances, the Bees have not made the pressure count.
United will need to change a lot after the interval if they are going to get anything out of this match.
ONE added minute
There is just the one added minute before the break.
The free-kick came to nothing for Man united, by the way.
YELLOW CARD: Brentford 0-0 Man United (Wissa)
Yoane Wissa is late on Bruno Fernandes as he dashes across him, but is there even any contact?
Anyway, Manchester United have a great set-piece opportunity here.
Brentford 0-0 Man United
Ring the alarm, Manchester United have had an effort on goal.
Marcus Rashford tries to rec-create that thunderbolt he scored against Manchester City, but it doesn’t come off and bounces easily through to mark Flekken.
At least they have finally had an attack though.
Brentford 0-0 Man United
Another last-ditch challenge by Raphael Varane to stop Ivan Toney from getting an effort off on goal.
This time he hurts himself from the tackle, but he gets up and dusts himself off for the incoming corner, which comes to nothing.
YELLOW CARD: Brentford 0-0 Man United (Wan-Bissaka)
Our first yellow card of the game goes to Aaron Wan Bissaka.
The full-back wipes out Mads Roerslev, it was always going to be a booking.
Brentford 0-0 Man United
Is a goal ever going to come for Brentford?
It’s more brilliant play from the Bees as Vitaly Janelt feeds Mads Roerslev in the area.
Roerslev flicks it onto Yoane Wissa who tries the spectacular but it doesn’t come off and goes over.
Chelsea know that he can get them right though.
Brentford 0-0 Man United
Another chance goes begging for Brentford and Ivan Toney.
The England striker goes close again but can’t keep his strike on target. Janelt then fires over after another attack.
Man United are hanging on at the moment.
HIT THE BAR! Brentford 0-0 Man United
Brentford hit the woodwork for a second time.
This time a corner does bring a chance as Mathias Jensen is played the ball and crosses in delightfully for Mathias Jorgensen who heads onto the bar and over.
I thought he was about to score in truth! Will the Bees regret these misses?
Brentford 0-0 Man United
Keane Lewis-Potter is causing United problems.
He puts in another fantastic cross which Raphael Varane has to put behind. It was a big touch as Ivan Toney was lurking.
Brentford 0-0 Man United
Brentford are giving this a real go.
Ivan Toney brings out the so-called ‘twinkle toes’ to get around a couple of players before trying to find Yehor Yarmoliuk.
The Ukranian can’t get on the end of the pass though as Diogo Dalot puts in a great tackle to deny him.
HIT THE POST! Brentford 0-0 Man United
So close to an opener from Ivan Toney.
It’s brilliant build-up by Brentford and Yoane Wissa squeezes through a first-time pass to send Toney on his way.
You’d expect Toney to slot it away one-on-one, but it comes back off the inside of the post before being cleared for a corner.
Wissa then has a go himself but it flies wide.
The best chance of the game so far!
Brentford 0-0 Man United
It’s all Brentford at the minute.
Ivan Toney has the ball down for a free-kick in a good position and he fires it straight into the wall. It does go for a corner though, which again comes to nothing.
Man United are struggling to get out.
Brentford 0-0 Man United
It’s corners galore for Brentford, but none of them are coming to anything.
After a third in succession, Mathias Jensen fires a cross in at speed which is punched away by Andre Onana.
The Bees are applying pressure and the crowd is responding to that.
Brentford 0-0 Man United
Brilliant defending from Victor Lindelof.
Yoane Wissa looks like a live wire today and he somehow comes out with the ball on the byline.
He then fires in a low cross towards Ivan Toney, but Lindelof vitally puts it behind for a corner, which is put behind for another one.
Brentford 0-0 Man United
They had no need to worry, it’s cleared easily.
I would watch out for set pieces in this game. They could be the key to goals.
Brentford have only kept one clean sheet at home all season…
Brentford 0-0 Man United
Manchester United are starting to push Brentford deep.
They work the ball to Diogo Dalot who has a crack that is deflected wide for a corner.
Brentford fans hold their breath, they aren’t so good at defending corners.
Brentford 0-0 Man United
There’s been a lot of build-up play around both boxes, but neither side have really created chances as of yet.
Whenever United have the ball you can hear a pin drop, but when Brentford launch an attack the atmosphere springs into life.
Brentford 0-0 Man United
Toney then shows no signs of any soreness to rise highest from the corner. However, he heads wide.
Brentford have shown some good signs of attacking intent in the early stages.
Brentford 0-0 Man United
Keane Lewis-Potter lofts in a tantalising ball for Ivan Toney to attack, but Aaron Wan-Bissaka gets their first to put it behind for a corner.
Toney goes down with a sore one but is ok to continue.
Brentford 0-0 Man United
A fast-paced start from both.
Brentford go forward in their numbers after Ivan Toney sets them on their way, but Mathias Jensen can’t finish off the move.
Man United then fly forward on the counterattack, which ends in Bruno Fernandes firing wide.
KICK-OFF: Brentford 0-0 Man United
Our 8pm Saturday night game is underway. Manchester United will be after a quick start.
Fan Prediction: ‘4-0 Brentford’
Anonymous: Rooting for a re-run of the 4-0. Come on Brentford!
An optimistic Brentford fan I suspect…
Moments away from kick-off
The brilliant music is interrupted by the rather mundane Premier League tune.
Kick-off is moments away and I for one can’t wait.
As I moan about the music they bring out ‘Hey Jude’ by the Beatles, what a song.
Under the lights…show
Light shows seem to be such a big thing in modern football.
Brentford have got theirs underway, which means the teams will be out very soon.
But, for now, I am going to enjoy the spectacle!
Predictions?
We are closing in on kick-off.
So, you know what time it is, we want to hear your predictions.
I’m going to go 3-1 to Manchester United, they will have taken so much confidence from that win over Liverpool.
Comment down below your thoughts!
Yarmoliuk gets his chance
Yehor Yarmoliuk gets his shot in the centre of midfield.
The Ukranian has found opportunities hard to come by, but tonight he has the chance to put a marker down.
He will be up against it, facing a strong United midfield. Let’s see what he can do.
Thomas Frank: ‘I think their front four are very very good’
Thomas Frank, Brentford manager, speaking to Sky Sports:
Big challenge. I said before the game that I think their front four are very very good.
Plus they are in form, Hojlund was on fire, Garnacho on fire, Rashford is picking up and Fernandes is the best attacking player in terms of creating chances.
Hojlund back in PL action
Man United will be happy to have this man back.
Rasmus Hojlund was on an absolute tear before injury stopped him in his tracks, but after 3 Premier League games out, he starts again.
Can he get back to the form he was before?
Manchester United’s forgotten man
Remember when Mason Mount was lighting up the Premier League with Chelsea?
Well, it feels like a very long time ago now.
Mount has only appeared in a United shirt 13 times since his arrival in the Summer and is yet to score for the club.
When he signed for the Red Devils I was sure he was going to be a success, but so far it has not gone too well.
There is still time for that to change though. Mount is on the bench tonight and will be looking to make an impact if called upon.
When on form, Mount is a brilliant player to have on your team.
More McTominay magic?
United fans will know what this post is just by the headline… and so will Brentford.
Back in October, Manchester United somehow found a way to beat Brentford 2-1 at Old Trafford. It was all because of one man.
With 92 minutes on the clock, Brentford were one goal to the good and looked like securing a massive win at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’. Up step Scott McTominay.
The Scottish international netted in both the 93rd and the 97th minute to turn the tide spectacularly. It was a repeat of United’s 99′ heroics against Bayern.
They won’t want to leave that late today – I think that would break Brentford if it did.
United’s regular joy over Brentford
Manchester United’s humbling at the hands of Brentford last season has been well documented.
However, if you look at their history against the Bees, they boast a rather strong record.
United have won eight out of their last 10 meetings with Brentford, not a bad record.
How many minutes for Mbuemo?
Bryan Mbuemo made his long-awaited return from injury before the international break against Brentford.
Bees fans would have wanted to see him start today, but he is named among the substitutes once again.
It will be interesting to see how long he gets today. He has the ability to cause United real problems.
Mbuemo can be electrifying at times.
‘Any repeat of the 4-0 hammering would be catastrophic’
Chris Wheeler, Mail Sport, at the GTech Community Stadium:
With Spurs coming from behind to beat Luton earlier and Villa two up against Wolves, the pressure is really on United to win here. They face Chelsea on Thursday and Liverpool on Sunday so, with all respect to Brentford, they really have to pick up three points tonight.
Of course, Ten Hag knows from painful experience that’s easier said than done. But any repeat of the 4-0 hammering at the hands of Brentford in only his second game in charge last season would be catastrophic.
Brentford Starting XI – Mbuemo remains on bench
Thomas Frank makes two changes to the side that lost 2-1 away at Burnley.
Bryan Mbuemo makes the bench again, I wonder how many minutes he will get today?
Man United Team News – Mainoo STARTS
The big news is that Kobbie Mainoo is fit to start despite missing training due to illness.
There are more returns to the squad too, as Casemiro, Lisandro Martinez, and Harry Maguire all make the bench.
United fans, are you happy?
Team news minutes away
The anticipation is killing me!
We are just moments away from finding out the line-ups. Will Mainoo be fit to start? How will Thomas Frank set up?
Those questions will be answered very soon.
Mainoo on team bus!
Well, just as I say that, Chris Wheeler, Mail Sport, has some details for us.
Kobbie Mainoo is in the building alongside both Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez.
Will they be fit though? We will find out very soon!
Mainoo the maestro a DOUBT
From one international debutant to the other, but this one may not be fit to play today.
Kobbie Mainoo bagged his first two caps for England during the international break, and all I can say is wow.
Well, that’s not all I am going to say because I want to eulogise about him so more.
Mainoo was simply brilliant for England and has potentially now nailed down a spot at Euro 2024 at just 18 years of age.
However, will he be back in club colours today?
Mainoo has been out of training due to illness and we await to see if he will be fit enough to make the trip to west London.
If he misses out it will be a huge blow for United.
Toney to bring international form to club level?
Ivan Toney has had a good couple of weeks if you ask me.
He netted his first goal for England in his first start and is now looking likely to be on the plane to the Euros.
Can he bring that confidence back to Brentford?
At club level of late, he has struggled a little bit. He has not found the back of the net in his last five Premier League matches.
Before that, he bagged four in five. He needs to refind that form.
Today he has the perfect opportunity to do that.
Villa lead Wolves at Villa Park
While we await the players to arrive here in West London, there is a game ongoing in Birmingham.
I love a derby, and so do Aston Villa it seems as they lead Wolves 1-0 at Villa Park.
Moussa Diaby’s goal was sensational by the way, you could watch it over and over again.
The second half has just gotten underway, so why not go check it out?
The scene is set
The GTech Community stadium is ready.
The sun may be going down now, but it was very lovely today in London. I’ve quite enjoyed the weather recently!
As the sky descends into darkness though, both sets of players will begin to trickle into the stadium.
It’s set to be a cracker.
Blast from the past: Brentford 4-0 Man United
Man United fans, you may want to look away from this post.
The last time the Red Devils visited Brentford, it was not such a happy time for them – they have probably blocked it from their memory.
Brentford wept United aside with relative ease in August 2023, shipping four goals past them in the first half.
It was Erik ten Hag’s second league match in charge, it wasn’t the best of starts.
However, they did beat Liverpool in their next game and went on a strong run of form.
Surely we won’t see another result like this today.
Brentford’s torrid run of form
Not many people would have predicted Brentford would be in the predicament that they are currently in.
The Bees have taken just 10 points from their last 18 matches and sit just four points above the drop zone.
their loss to Burnley before the international break was perhaps their worst of the season.
Thomas Frank has to find a way to turn it around, but today they have a tough task ahead of them.
United to build on LFC triumph?
Manchester United fans will still be beaming from seeing the sight of Amad Diallo wheeling away in celebration.
The 4-3 win over Liverpool in the FA Cup will live long in the memory of United fans, but tonight their team has a job to do.
Before the start of the day, United were nine points off the Champions League spots, so their chances of making a late push for them are slim.
Nevertheless, a win over Brentford today would be just what they need to build on their recent momentum.
Thomas Frank will not want that to happen though.
Welcome!
I’m looking forward to this one tonight. Can Manchester United build on their magnificent win over Liverpool in the FA Cup, or will Brentford stop them in their tracks?
They have a tough act to follow, today’s games so far have been spectacular, and goals flew in all over the place.
So, will there be more coming our way? I hope so, I love a goal-fest!
