A migrant has been electrocuted in a human fireball after climbing on top of a Eurostar train and getting struck by a charge from an overhead cable.

The man unexpectedly crossed the tracks of two platforms yesterday evening shortly before 10pm at Gare du Nord station in Paris, Le Parisien reported.

He then climbed onto the roof of a train leaving for England. The victim died from electrocution and the entire scene was captured in surveillance footage, according to police.

The man can be seen standing up before bursting into flames, the publication reported.

Firefighters rushed to the scene and were able to extinguish the flames at around 10.20pm.

Emergency services tried to save the man but he was declared dead within a quarter of an hour, Le Parisien reported.

The police said the man was a migrant. He could not be identified due to the severity of his burns.

The incident did not cause any issues for rail traffic.

In 2017, another man was electrocuted to death at Gare du Nord while climbing onto the roof of a Eurostar train.

The migrant died from horrific burns which meant that he could not be identified.

In July 2015, the same thing happened to an Egyptian teenager at the station. The force of the electric shock threw him below and he was left in a life-threatening condition.

Last month, it was revealed that Eurostar passenger numbers are up by a fifth, despite many travellers between London and Paris still snubbing the train for cheaper flights.

The rail operator said it carried 18.6million passengers last year – a rise of 22 per cent on the previous 12 months and a return to pre-Covid levels last seen in 2019.

Eurostar tends to be a more expensive method for travelling from the UK to its direct locations of Paris, Lille, Brussels, Amsterdam and Rotterdam compared to flying.
