A ‘major police incident’ has been declared after a man was arrested accused of firing arrows into the street from a home using a longbow weapon.

Armed police rushed to the scene after reports of someone using a crossbow on Bedminster Parade in Bristol into the adjacent Stillhouse Lane.

He was arrested at 16.10 and remains in custody, with Avon and Somerset Police confirming that a bow with arrows had been seized.

Avon and Somerset Police said: ‘Police have detained a man after reports of someone firing what was initially described as a crossbow into Stillhouse Lane from an address in Bedminster Parade, Bristol.

‘Officers detained a man just after 4.10pm and seized a longbow-type bow and arrows. A man is under arrest and in police custody.

‘Road closures are being lifted. Enquiries continue and anyone with information or footage which could help the investigation is asked to call 101 and give the reference 5224230115 of today, 31 August.’

First West of England has posted on X, formerly Twitter, that ‘due to a major police incident’, buses will be diverted. It added that passengers should avoid Bedminster.
